FREE NIGHT OF THEATRE 2010

As someone who’s lucky enough, knock on wood, to be able to see tons of the fabulous (and some not) theatre that Los Angles has to offer, I’m thrilled to be able to pass this info on to you guys.L.A. Stage Alliance has announced the launch of Free Night of Theatre 2010, which is an audience development program for theatre in greater Los Angeles, sponsored by Sony Pictures Entertainment.

This is how it works, according to the press release: “Now through October 6, visitors to www.FreeNightLA.com will be able to submit an entry to win up to five pairs of complimentary tickets to productions throughout the region. On October 9, entrants will be notified which tickets they have won, and then will attend performances during the second half of October.

“This year is notable in that L.A. Stage Alliance is piloting a new ‘enter-to-win’ version of Free Night, instead of the previous version where theatres offered specific allotments and audiences raced to claim tickets. The ‘enter-to-win’ version takes the time pressure away, and allows patrons to receive as many as five pairs of tickets instead of just one pair.”

The program will be giving away thousands of tickets to hundreds of performances that you can attend from October 14 through 31. I checked-out the offerings myself, and while there don’t appear to be any at L.A.’s bigger theatres, there’s plenty to choose from. (Ninety-seven shows total, as a matter of fact!) I’m not familiar with any of these current productions, but I can tell you which shows I particularly like in general, and which I don’t.

Helen Mirren in "Phedre."

My likes: The Importance Of Being Earnest, Barefoot In The Park, and Waiting For Godot. (That last one’s not fun, but important for references for the rest of one’s life,)

My dislikes: God’s Favorite, Beehive, Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, All my Sons, and especially The Goat and Hedda Gabler.

Ones I would see if I were going to be in town then: Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Helen Mirren in Phedre, Joe Bologna (always funny) and Renee Taylor in Sort Of A Love Story and Bell, Book, and Candle.

Now matter what production you see, though, you can’t go wrong for the price! And, if possible, why not bring along a child or two? It’s never too early to develop the next generation of theatre-goers. (It looks like there are actually a few specifically for kids, in fact, such as Jack and the Beanstalk.) Just please teach them proper audience behavior before you venture out! (I’ll try to print my column on that subject prior to the October 14th start date, so please definitely check it out. Especially if you’ll be sitting near me!)
