HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY 2024 ON SUNDAY (BUT BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH TODAY!)

Luckily for those of you who want to celebrate this fun holiday, but didn’t realize the date amongst the rest of your uber-busy lives, you have me here to remind you! So now you have two days to get it together because it’s not until Sunday.

What a beautiful cake with which to celebrate the occasion!

What a beautiful cake with which to celebrate the occasion!

However, I have a feeling that many of you will be partying tomorrow night, because it’s Saturday, which means that instead of doing a pub crawl on Sunday, you’ll be doing a bathroom floor crawl! (At least that’s what I understand—I don’t drink, so I’ve never been drunk.)

After I had already written almost this entire column, I finally realized what today, March 15th, is—it’s the dreaded Ides of March! So, just as Julius Caesar was warned–Beware the Ides of March!

As I shared on a previous occasion when I published my Happy St. Patrick’s Day column on the 15th because it occurred on the upcoming week-end, I have a wee amusing anecdote about these two days together. Here ’tis:

I think the knife in the background says it all!

One of my less-bright pals, who gets many things wrong in life, called me on one past March 15th, and asked seriously, “Karen, be honest—do you have to worry about the Ides if you’re not Irish?!” I couldn’t even laugh at the absurdity of that query; her perpetual wrongness usually makes me laugh, but this one took the cake. I had to explain that the only things that being Irish and the Ides of March have in common is…that they both begin with an “I!!!!”

Getting back to reality, just as these dates worked out five years ago, not only is this Sunday, the 17th, St. Paddy’s Day, but it’s also the college basketball March Madness Selection Show, which those who’ve been paying attention to this e-zine know I don’t want to miss. It’s tons of fun to see all the young players get soooo excited when their school is called.

But I will miss it happening live, and not because of this Irish holiday. Rather, I’ll be at an Opening Night that I’ll tell you about next week. But in a green dress, of course.

Speaking of green, a little heads-up if you go anywhere today: if you’re not wearing green, prepare to be pinched! I know that I’ll be taking advantage of that rule! I’ve given you fair warning. I’m always safe because I polish my nails in at least one shade of the warm color. A further advantage of doing that now is that bright green is being touted in the fashion world as one of the favorite colors for Spring, (which begins on Tuesday, by the way.) So there’s that.

So, I hope that you all follow suit on Sunday, with nails, attire, accessories, whatever—just not teeth!

And I wish all of you a wonderful, fun, safe, and especially non-drunk, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! (And maybe stay put for today.)
