MOTHER’S DAY 2012

This is a hard column to write this year, but just because I’m suffering without my mother doesn’t mean I don’t wish everyone else a happy Mother’s Day. And as the title of this E-zine states, It’s Not About Me.

So, even though I can’t celebrate my own Mother’s Day for the first time in my life, I wanted to still write today’s column, to remind everyone to appreciate them while you can.

It’s perhaps even more important to write about this year because I really want to tell everyone to appreciate your mothers while you can. I’m lucky that, in this category, at least, I don’t have many regrets. I called my mother many times a day in the difficult recent years, and at least once a day in the dozen-plus years since she lost my father. I went home to Brooklyn to see her three or four times a year and stayed for about a month each time. Just about every gift she had in her house came from me, (well, the better ones were from Mr. X,) and I sent her at least seven cards for every holiday, including this one, with the entire batch orchestrated to build and mean something to her.

I’m not saying any of this to toot my own horn, but to perhaps be an example to others. As a matter of fact, I rarely thought about whether or not my mother appreciated any of this; rather, I did it because I loved her and wanted her to have as happy a life as possible. But, in going through her papers in the almost five months since I lost her, I found a wonderful note that she had written to me. It read: “Thank you, my lovely daughter, for coming here and relieving my tedium,” and went on to say how wonderful our times together had been. That meant the world to me, and is really helping me during this difficult time.

I know that everyone tells me that my mother was so special, and I’m grateful that I knew that fact my whole life, and let my mother know that I agreed. I’m so proud that I had a mother who my friends actually wanted to call and visit, even when I wasn’t there. (Well, perhaps especially when I wasn’t there!!!)

So, please everyone, celebrate the females in your life this week-end, and let them know how you feel about them.

And, to all of you who read this E-zine, I really do wish you all a very Happy Mother’s Day!!!
