The “magic” that the Montalban is offering is their Summer Movie Series of wonderful old films, which you can’t find too many other places in life, on their attractive rooftop. What a tribute to this venue that so many people came out to celebrate it. And during the recent heatwave, to boot!!! The place was absolutely packed to the gills!

People mingled all night, with some sitting at tables, a few in a couched corner, and many in the slingback chairs, facing the large projection screen where images of Ricardo Montalban himself were running throughout the night. I had met the man once when I first started out in the biz, and the wonderful impression he made on me is still fresh in my mind even all these years hence. What a lovely gent he was!

So that we could hear what was on that screen if we so chose, the organizers provided noise-canceling headphones to the attendees for the evening, as they do for all the films. I was worried about putting used headphones on my clean hair, but the workers who are in charge of them assured me they they’re cleaned after every wearing. Whew.

As much fun as all that was, including a performance by an excellent and sort-of nutty musician, Super Tall Paul, it seemed that the guests were the most interested in the tasty tidbits that were passed all night.

And let me tell you—that amiable staff definitely deserved some hazard pay! People were grabbing the food off those trays as quickly as the servers could get the snacks on them! You’d think these people had never eaten before! (Welcome to LA, I guess.)

The fare included three kinds of sliders: truffle burgers, fried chicken, and veggie, along with skinny fries, sweet potato fries, cheesy tots, and finally, cookie bites with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert.

There was also an open bar, a photo booth, games on the tables to play if you got bored, and the concession stand doled out popcorn and candy all night. What a generous soiree!!!

The VIPs left with passes to a movie of our choice up there, and our only problem is just which classic film to see! Should we choose Breakfast at Tiffany’s or Some Like It Hot? I have an idea—how about both!

I hope that you’ll join us up there this summer. (But one caution: There are at least three flights of stairs to get up to the roof, and no elevator, so, unfortunately, this is not the venue for people with any type of physical challenges. And, fair warning to even the hardiest of hipsters—there are no restrooms up there, either! So, this might just be a job for Depends!!!)
