Hence my grammar lesson for today is \u201cAdverbs.\u201d The category choice is because those tennis commentators obviously never heard of an \u201cly!\u201d Seriously, how can they all<\/em> leave those letters off every word that should definitely have them at the end???? They must have all been absent that day! And why is there not one person on the rest of the staff who\u2019s intelligent enough to correct them??? Or at least read my tweets on the topic, and realize someone has to say something to them??? I honestly can\u2019t understand it.<\/p>\n I was going to save this subject to include in my Wimbledon 2016 wrap-up, (which will have to wait over a week from the end of the tournament,) but their communal practice of leaving the \u201cly\u201d off just about word that needs it has become even more like nails on a chalkboard to me, so here we are.<\/p>\n In case you don\u2019t remember your \u201cadverb\u201d lessons yourself, here\u2019s the very brief explanation: When verbs, such as \u201caggressive,\u201d are used to describe how<\/em> an action is performed, the suffix \u201cly\u201d is added to the word, making it into \u201caggressively.\u201d<\/p>\n Therefore, when you want to state how an athlete is playing tennis, (or any sport or game,) the correct term is that he or she is playing \u201caggressively.\u201d Simple enough to understand and put into practice, right?<\/p>\n But these ESPN commentators do not get that very simple concept!!! How is that possible? Some of them even went to college! But they all speak like they didn\u2019t even pass kindergarten!<\/p>\n Caroline Wozniacki. And amusingly<\/em>, my gmail kept trying to correct all of them when I sent this article to my proofreader!):<\/p>\n Perhaps the worst offender is Caroline Wozniacki<\/strong>. She does it all<\/em> the time! One time, she referred to \u201cthe one who played more aggressive<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cHe played phenomenal<\/strong>,\u201d as opposed to \u201cphenomenally<\/em>,\u201d by Sam Querrey, who has many good things to say otherwise.<\/p>\n He also asked a player, \u201cWhat could you have done different<\/strong> in this match?\u201d<\/p>\n Chris Eubanks<\/strong> said, \u201cHe hit patient<\/strong>,\u201d instead of the correct \u201cpatiently<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n He also exclaimed, \u201cShe played flawless<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n That one must have been catching, because even the young-ish play-by-play guy, Mike Monaco<\/strong>, said, \u201cWow\u2014he played flawless<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat they\u2019ve done so amazing<\/strong> throughout their careers is\u2026,\u201d said by the older, very wealthy, and usually well-spoken Jessica<\/strong> Pegula<\/strong>!!!<\/p>\n<\/a>
