Sorry for the shallow picture in such a serious column, but I figure it's a better reminder to watch tonight's telethon than a picture of the devastation would be.<\/p><\/div>\n
While I know that we all need to contribute to that end, I don\u2019t back any specific<\/em> charity for aid to Haiti. I suggest that you please look around for yourselves and make sure that you choose a legitimate<\/em> one that will use the money immediately<\/em> to alleviate the unimaginable human suffering as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n Olivia Wilde\u2019s organization, Artists for Peace and Justice<\/strong>, sounds good to me. She had it going before this devastating tragedy, so it seems like she would have a pipeline directly to the hospitals in Haiti that are in desperate need of everything. And they\u2019re auctioning off some of the Golden Globes fashions, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the relief efforts.<\/p>\n I\u2019ve seen it reported that Leonardo DiCaprio has donated a million dollars to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund<\/strong>, which I believe is an excellent choice, as well.<\/p>\n In case you didn\u2019t know, or just forgot, tonight at 8PM is the big telethon, Hope For Haiti<\/strong>, that George Clooney put together. It\u2019s on something like seventeen channels, so you won\u2019t have any trouble finding it, and seems like a good bet.<\/p>\n Last night, on an otherwise not special new TV show, I heard a quote that really made sense to me. \u201cIt\u2019s what we do in the worst of times that tells the world who we really are.\u201d This is one of those \u201cworst of times,\u201d especially for a people who were already plagued by disease and poverty. Haiti really needs all of our help. And remember, it\u2019s not the size of the donation–it\u2019s that you\u2019re donating at all.<\/p>\n Here are three other charities I know of that are helping, but please really do the research on them yourself to make sure that you choose the right one for your contribution: UPDATE<\/strong>: A southern California event for Haitian relief has just come to my attention, which is open to the public, so I\u2019m passing it on to you:<\/span><\/p>\n <\/em>Next Monday, February 1, 2010 A Pasadena Playhouse Benefit Concert for Haiti <\/em>will be held at 7:30PM. (Get there early because they\u2019ll have music, raffles, and refreshments in the front courtyard from 6:00 until curtain time.)<\/p>\n Many singers, whom you\u2019ve probably seen in productions around town over the years, will be performing.
