The event was a bit different this time, and perhaps even more beautiful. It was held in a new venue to me, the Ziegfeld Ballroom, which is right in the heart of the Theatre District, which was perfect for me, because\u2014here\u2019s a shock\u2014I was once again overbooked; I was reviewing the incredible Broadway musical, Tootsie<\/em>, that same night. (In case you missed it, here\u2019s my review of Tootsie<\/em>, which is, very sadly, closing soon: itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/theatre-tootsie<\/a>.) So the new location of the gala made the entire evening really convenient for me. (Even though, as the title of this e-zine states, it\u2019s not about me.)<\/p>\n Deborah Norville. The answer is the over two dozen people in the broadcasting industry who were inducted into the 2019 Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame that night. And I\u2019m glad to report that most were not<\/em> famous, (except to probably others in their line of work.)<\/p>\n The most known of the honorees at this the Twenty-ninth\u00a0Anniversary Gala was Meredith Vieira, along with the correspondents on Dateline<\/em>, which I admit that I do<\/em> watch on occasion, (usually when I need reminding of just how wonderful my own<\/em> life is!) Most of the others were Presidents and CEOs of networks and studios. Of special interest is that one of the hosts of the evening was Deborah Norville, who had been inducted herself the last time I attended it in 2016! So she\u2019s come full circle with the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame! I like that symmetry.<\/p>\n Kerry Washington. Photo by Sheila Tracy, as is the one at the top of this page.<\/p><\/div>\n As we were leaving, we saw Dateline<\/em>\u2019s Keith Morrison (who is much<\/em> taller than we expected) get off the elevator, and he gave us a big smile when he heard my associate mention his name. That was good to see. I\u2019m just glad he didn\u2019t grill us!<\/p>\n And everyone seemed delighted that the uber-thin Kerry Washington was there, as well. I kept hearing people gush about how beautiful she is.<\/p>\n Since, as I already alluded to, I was triple-booked that night, (what else is new, right?,) we were able to be there for only the cocktail portion of the evening, which was served in the upstairs bar area, overlooking the stunning ballroom where the actual dinner took place. But that was gratifying enough for us.<\/p>\n And the hors d\u2019oeuvres were phenomenal! I have no idea how anyone still ate a full dinner after even just a few<\/em> of those tasty treats! There were tiny tidbits of short rib; mango sushi, (which was fun because I don\u2019t eat raw fish, so I rarely get to try any<\/em> sushi); mini lobster rolls; lamb chops with a pretzel stick as the bone\u2014how adorbs; crab cakes; gorgeous caviar on a champagne cloud; and my<\/em> fave, (on both levels,) the cleverly-named \u201cFig in a Blanket,\u201d which contained a fig in place of the usual mini hot dog!<\/p>\n There were also containers of potato chips and hollowed-out chick peas on the bar, with little bamboo dishes to put the snacks into instead of a gauche napkin or, even more gauche, your hand. (Though I did<\/em> spy a few nescients doing the latter.)<\/p>\n The classy bar snacks. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n All the while we were entertained by lovely non-intrusive music provided by a live strings trio.<\/p>\n And here\u2019s more<\/em> good news\u2014just about every member of the assemblage was appropriately dressed-up and looking marvelous, like the glitterati in a grand movie. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I say this next part with my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, but I know that some of you have been waiting since 2016 for me to discuss this, so here goes: To those fans of my former Los Angeles cable television show who read my write-up of this Gala three years ago, and wrote to ask me (I\u2019m sure jokingly, although I appreciate the love) if I\u2019ll<\/em> ever be inducted into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame, (since I fit both the \u201cbroadcasting\u201d and \u201ccable\u201d requirements,) I say do not hold your breath. Even though Karen\u2019s Restaurant Revue<\/em> is often referred to as \u201cthe original reality show,\u201d most New York peeps are not even aware of it. I have a feeling I won\u2019t ever be recognized for it again, except posthumously, so, knock on wood, that\u2019s too many years away to even think about now. (And achieving my lifelong dream of being on The Tonight Show<\/em> with Johnny Carson multiple times is career recognition enough to last a lifetime! I don\u2019t ever need anything else.)
