But I\u2019ve had no time for full reviews this go-round. (Sorry about that, readers.) So, before Sunday\u2019s Oscars, here, finally, are my tiny takes on many of this season\u2019s offerings. I believe the full title of a lot of these actual awards is something like \u201cBest Achievement in&#8230;,\u201d and as we were watching it, I said to Mr. X, \u201cWhat an achievement in filmmaking this is!!!\u201d He and I saw this movie from Mexico almost two weeks ago, and our heads are still reeling from what writer, director, producer,<em>\u00a0cinematographer<\/em>, and<em>\u00a0editor<\/em>\u00a0all rolled into one, Alfonso Cuar\u00f3n, was able to accomplish! And, although\u00a0the star, Yalitza Aparicio, had never acted before, she was perfection!!! I\u00a0<em>did<\/em>\u00a0enjoy\u00a0<em>Green Book<\/em>\u00a0more, but\u00a0<em>Roma<\/em>\u00a0really deserves to win Best Picture. And, as Mr. X said, too, we had never rooted for a Sound winner before, but these peeps deserve every award in the book! (It didn\u2019t hurt that we saw it in a special surround-sound screening venue!)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Girl<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This foreign film from Belgium, although nominated for <em>nothing<\/em>, is the second best film of the year! The boy star, Victor Polster, should have been nominated for\u00a0<em>everything<\/em>!\u00a0 His was the jaw-dropping knock-out performance of the year!\u00a0 Why has no one but me been talking about him?! \u00a0(Don&#8217;t believe me? \u00a0Well, that&#8217;s Victor in the photo at the top of this page, on the left in that trio!!! <em>Now<\/em> do you believe me???)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38661\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/greenbook_0hero-h_2018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38661\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38661\" src=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/greenbook_0hero-h_2018-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, two of the hardest names to type!\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/greenbook_0hero-h_2018-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/greenbook_0hero-h_2018.jpg 928w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, two of the hardest names to type!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Green Book<\/em><\/strong>\u2014My absolute fave!\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>so<\/em> good, in fact, that I\u2019m thrilled\u00a0I chose to see it as my birthday celebration!\u00a0 And I can&#8217;t wait to see it again. I\u2019d really love Viggo Mortensen to win the Best Actor Oscar, and I <em>know<\/em> that Mahershala Ali will win the Supporting one, although he really should have been in the Lead category, as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Favourite<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This tale is a tad strange, but when I researched the topic after, I discovered that it\u2019s basically a true story.\u00a0 Who knew?! (I guess the screenwriters did\u2014duh.) But the nominations are skewed\u2014Olivia Colman, who plays the Queen, should have been nominated for\u00a0<em>Supporting<\/em>, as opposed to\u00a0<em>Lead<\/em>, while the converse applies to the nods for Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. Hollywood, eh?<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A Star Is Born<\/em><\/strong>\u2014I was never\u00a0<em>not<\/em>\u00a0aware that she wasn\u2019t Lady Gaga on that screen, which is not good.\u00a0 Otherwise, this one is okay, but it\u2019s far from the amazing film that <del>sheep<\/del> people make it out to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BlacKkKlansman<\/em><\/strong>\u2014Of main interest in this one is that star John David Washington sounds <em>exactly<\/em> like his father, Denzel. But his work here doesn\u2019t show him to be a special actor, which makes the movie sort-of long and tedious, even though it\u2019s a positive true story of good triumphing over evil.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38665\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4c79167f5c31c38a0363f271b139f241dc7f7367-e1550604478922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38665\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38665\" src=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4c79167f5c31c38a0363f271b139f241dc7f7367-e1550604478922-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"Henry Golding and Constance Wu, who looks a heck of a lot younger in this film than she does on her TV show!\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4c79167f5c31c38a0363f271b139f241dc7f7367-e1550604478922-300x231.jpg 300w, https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4c79167f5c31c38a0363f271b139f241dc7f7367-e1550604478922-1024x788.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/4c79167f5c31c38a0363f271b139f241dc7f7367-e1550604478922.jpg 1132w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38665\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Henry Golding and Constance Wu, who looks a heck of a lot younger in this film than she does on her TV show!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Crazy Rich Asians<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This one is not at all what I expected!\u00a0 I thought it was going to be a crazy comedy ala\u00a0<em>The Hangover<\/em>, maybe because I knew that Ken Jeong is in both.\u00a0 But it surprised me by being a charming romantic comedy.\u00a0 With a gorgeous leading man in Henry Golding, which, of course, made me like it even more.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Bohemian Rhapsody<\/em><\/strong>\u2014I liked this one more than many people did, but less than the rest of the reviewers.\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting enough, and Rami Malek does an excellent Freddie Mercury, although he really does not deserve all the awards he\u2019s winning, when this season\u2019s acting jobs of Christian Bale and Viggo Mortensen are far superior to his. As far as the story goes, since two Queen members were the consultants, I assume most of it is true, but it didn\u2019t really get to me.\u00a0 (I\u2019ve never been a Queen fan, except maybe now that they feature Adam Lambert.)\u00a0 I thought that Gwilym Lee, the guy who plays Brian May, is spot-on, though. (And I\u2019m thrilled for Adam to get to sing on the Oscars because of the renewed interest in Queen! That boy has sure come far since I first met him singing in small shows around town.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This one is so boring and depressing.\u00a0 Yes, Regina King is excellent in it, as is the entire cast, but it\u2019s sooo slow.\u00a0 And being real, I feel that the only reason it\u2019s getting any attention at all is because of the involvement of Barry Jenkins, who won the Oscar for <em>Moonlight<\/em> a couple of years ago.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38659\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2way-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38659\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38659\" src=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2way-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Christian Bale on the right as himself, and the left as Dick Cheney!!!  How miraculous is that?!\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2way-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/2way-2-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Christian Bale on the right as himself, and the left as Dick Cheney!!! How miraculous is that?!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Vic<\/em>e<\/strong>\u2014I thought that that is really creepy Dick Cheney on the screen!\u00a0 I never once thought it was really Christian Bale\u2014that\u2019s how great he is in this otherwise semi-boring film.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The Wife<\/em><\/strong>\u2014For the first three quarters, I kept wondering what the fuss about Glenn Close was.\u00a0 She\u2019s good, but nothing special.\u00a0 But the last quarter showed me what is up.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Can You Ever Forgive Me<\/em><\/strong>\u2014Which is what the producers should be asking me for making me watch it!!!<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Beautiful Boy<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This one is too depressing for me to be able to even evaluate the performances.\u00a0 But chances are when you play a young drug addict, you\u2019ll get nominations, as Timothee Chalamet has.\u00a0 (But did you notice that with this, and two other \u201cimportant\u201d films this year, Steve Carrell couldn\u2019t get\u00a0<em>any<\/em>\u00a0nods?)<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>A Quiet Place<\/em><\/strong>\u2014See this one\u00a0<em>only<\/em>\u00a0with someone you want to hold on to!\u00a0 It\u2019s scare-yyy!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38685\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/23dick-van-dyke-2-articleLarge.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38685\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-38685\" src=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/23dick-van-dyke-2-articleLarge-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Dick Van Dyke--I guess he was mvoing too fast for anyone to get a good snap of him!\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/23dick-van-dyke-2-articleLarge-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/23dick-van-dyke-2-articleLarge.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dick Van Dyke&#8211;I guess he was mvoing too fast for anyone to get a good snap of him!<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><em>Mary Poppins Returns<\/em><\/strong>\u2014This is a sweet film, with fun special effects, and\u00a0Emily Blunt is charming.\u00a0 I hate to say this next part, because I\u2019m such a fan of his, but Lin-Manuel Miranda is sort-of miscast.\u00a0 I think he\u2019s in there solely for his star power.
