But I still watch because I\u2019ve been doing it my whole life. And, of course, I must review them for all of\u00a0you<\/em>!<\/p>\n Before I begin, I have to clear-up the biggest mystery of the night. (And no\u2014it is not<\/em> who that weirdo-looking character in the front row was!) For everyone who\u2019s been asking me why it\u2019s on a Monday this year, (as opposed to the usual Sunday airing,) the answer is one that even\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0did not know at first. I thought it might have something to do with the early Jewish holidays, or giving some of the guests a day in-between the gifting suites, or to give the celebs an extra night to recover from Saturday night\u2019s fetes.<\/p>\n But none of that is the reason. Ready for it? The Emmys are on a Monday now so as to not clash with the early-season football games!!! (Perhaps the powers-that-be were around for that very old school Superbowl-Heidi debacle way back in the day, and it scarred them for life. And they are trying to make up for it now.)<\/p>\n Now that you finally know that answer, (you\u2019re welcome, by the way,) let\u2019s get to my sort-of brief reviews (because I live-tweeted many of my thoughts already. So maybe you should follow me on Twitter, if you don\u2019t already.\u00a0@MajorCelebrity<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n A FEW OVERALL NOTES<\/strong><\/p>\n I was wondering why this show seemed like a weird version of Saturday Night Live<\/em>, and then I realized that it was produced by Lorne Michaels<\/strong>. He featured way too many of his own cast members on the Emmys, some multiple times!!! Like the beyond-dreadful Fred Armisen <\/strong>and Maya Rudolph<\/strong> bits, which totally bombed<\/em>.\u00a0 Big-time! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And even though I love him, I couldn\u2019t figure-out why SNL<\/em>\u2019s Kenan Thompson<\/strong> was presenting the final<\/em> award of the night, which the biggest<\/em> star usually does. Making the Emmys basically a promo for his<\/em> show, SNL<\/em>, was not right of Lorne Michaels to do. And it weakened the Emmys. I\u2019m so glad that a different network will produce the show next year.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t think I\u2019m down with the weird new format of the presenters showing-up only to announce<\/em> the winners, rather than to first name the nominees. Yes, it probably does<\/em> make the show move faster because there\u2019s no tripping over names, (because none of them have heard of each other, either!,) but by the time they did their little \u201cpresenter patter,\u201d I totally forgot the category and the nominees!<\/p>\n Leslie Jones’ Sleeping Beauty-colored suit, which my mouth watered over! With so many TV shows nowadays, (most of which I\u2019ve never heard of,) it is nice to give so many actors a chance, but a nomination just seems not so exclusive anymore.<\/p>\n Remember when there used to be the Cable Ace<\/em> awards, for cable shows only<\/em>, because the Emmys was all about network<\/em> series? Well, maybe there should now be a Network Ace<\/em> awards, because the Emmys are really all about cable<\/em>! (And whatever the heck Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon are considered.) Just saying.<\/p>\n The on-air engagement of winner Glenn Weiss<\/strong> and his girlfriend was the best thing that\u2019s ever happened on the Emmys!!! Even Mr. X was screaming along with me. (And, by the way, as Glenn was speaking of his recently-deceased mother in his acceptance speech, I said to Mr. X, \u201cHe\u2019s going to propose to his girlfriend right now!\u201d I even predicted that the rest of his sentence, \u201cYou wonder why I don\u2019t like to call you my girlfriend,\u201d would be, \u201cBecause I want to call you my wife<\/em>!\u201d I\u2019m a genius at things like this.)<\/p>\n Chrissy Metz and Sandra Oh, looking like an opposite “10.” Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And on a shallow note (like all these others aren\u2019t<\/em>???,) the Best Dressed women there were (in no particular order)\u00a0Samira Wiley<\/strong>, Leslie Jones<\/strong>, Joey King<\/strong>, Taraji P. Henson<\/strong>, Issa<\/strong> Rae<\/strong>, Penelope Cruz<\/strong>, Keri Russell<\/strong>, and Zazie Beetz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n While the Worst Dressed were Tracee Ellis Ross<\/strong>,\u00a0Chrissy Metz<\/strong>, and Sandra Oh<\/strong>. (Why would she want to feature a completely flat chest like that???) And no one loves bright colors more than I do, but I\u2019m not a fan of Tiffany Hadish<\/strong>\u2019s rainbow dress. (And with her pattern of repeating outfits until everyone begs her to stop, I\u2019m sure we\u2019ll have to see this<\/em> one for another year! So major props to especially Thandie Newton<\/strong>, Claire Foy<\/strong>, and Joseph Fiennes<\/strong>\u2019 partner.<\/p>\n Wait\u2014I just realized\u2014no nods for\u00a0Modern Family<\/em> this year!!!\u00a0 That\u2019s a first, I think.<\/p>\n Okay, now let\u2019s get to the really<\/em> important stuff! (Yeah, right.):<\/p>\n E ARRIVALS SHOW<\/strong><\/p>\n Why would Jessica Biel show her flat chest like this?! It just looks weird. No one needs to know earlier than that.<\/p>\n Red Carpet host Jason Kennedy<\/strong> seems so nice.<\/p>\n Milo Ventimiglia<\/strong> was so nice; he listened to the high-foreheaded female host\u2019s inane question, and gave a thoughtful essay<\/em> answer!!! Wow.<\/p>\n Sterling K. Brown<\/strong> and his wife are always so nice.<\/p>\n Jessica Biel<\/strong> left something home\u2014oh yeah, her boobs.<\/p>\n I love that a kid from Stranger Things<\/em>, Noah Schnapp<\/strong>, still goes to sleep away camp! And admitted<\/em> it! Nice.<\/p>\n I have less than no idea who this woman is, but that is, by far, the most gorgeous gown there! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Colors seem to be the fashion of the day. And just white.<\/p>\n The gown on someone named Angela Sarafyan<\/strong> was stunning. But Mr. X said right away, \u201cI hope she\u2019s sitting on the aisle!\u201d<\/p>\n Trevor Noah<\/strong> is adorable!!! I guess I\u2019m the last to know.<\/p>\n When he told interviewer Jason Kennedy that he had watched his journey, Jason said, \u201cYou know I\u2019m not Ryan Seacrest, right?\u201d Very amusing and charming. I loved both<\/em> these dudes! (And how rare is that for me?!)<\/p>\n Justin Timberlake<\/strong> was really listening to his wife when she gave a long answer about her career!!! If she has a stylist, I want his or her name so I<\/em> never look that bad. That woman needs all the help she can get, and this was the opposite. (By the way, I\u2019m not \u201cfat-shaming.\u201d I\u2019m an equal-opportunity critic. I hate the stupid new rule that you can’t comment when heavy people look bad! You\u2019re allowed to rag on the looks of normal-weight people only these days. What a crock!)<\/p>\n Mandy Moore<\/strong> said Reese Witherspoon is her idol. Of course<\/em> she is\u2014they both have the same lisp!!!<\/p>\n Benedict Cumberbatch’s new short ‘do. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I have no idea who she is, but I now like Joey King and the guy she was with because they smiled right after a serious-faced photo. And her dress was great!<\/p>\n I love how much John Legend<\/strong> loves his wife, but Chrissy Teigen<\/strong> is<\/em> really funny-looking. How did she become a model to begin with?\u00a0 But they always seem really good together.<\/p>\n Benedict Cumberbatch<\/strong> looks so much better with his uber-short hair. He\u2019s still funny-looking, but it\u2019s definitely an improvement.<\/p>\n And what a nice, thoughtful, intelligent guy he is!<\/p>\n Betty Gilpin. Shame.<\/p>\n I never saw Betty Gilpin<\/strong> before, nor heard of her, but she looks like a behind-the scenes person, not a nominee. Her make-up was almost non-existent, her roots were showing, and that dreadful no-color dress accentuated her centaur-looking body!<\/p>\n Taraji P. Henson is adorable!<\/p>\n Jason and Zazie Beetz talked about how people mispronounce \u201cZazie,\u201d and she said that her mother thought it would be really easy. But her parents should have spelled it the way she wanted it pronounced!!! You don\u2019t spell it \u201cZa-zie\u201d\u00a0if you want it pronounced \u201cCess-ie!!!\u201d<\/p>\n Penelope Cruz is always so lovely.<\/p>\n NATIONAL NBC ARRIVALS<\/strong><\/p>\n Can this really be Andy Samberg??? Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n These three woman hosts, who I believe are from the Today<\/em> show, were the absolute worst interviewers. The could not rush everyone off any faster.<\/p>\n What has happened to Andy Samberg<\/strong>??? He looks like a little old man!<\/p>\n The wife of Chris Sullivan<\/strong>, of\u00a0This Is Us<\/em>\u00a0fame, could not be further from his\u00a0TV\u00a0<\/em>wife, Chrissy Metz. \u2019Nuff said on the subject.<\/p>\n The female hosts\u2019 fawning over Sandra Oh\u2019s Japanese parents was downright cringe-worthy. Savannah Guthrie said, \u201cOh they are gorgeous,\u201d like she was\u00a0talking about \u201cspecial\u201d children!!! Oysh.<\/p>\n Laura Dern<\/strong> is so lovely, intelligent, and not full-of-beans, as several others of these folks always are.<\/p>\n SOME IN-ORDER THOUGHTS ON THE SHOW<\/strong><\/p>\n Chris Sullivan and his wife, the anti-Chrissy Metz. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n What a great opening, both the funny song and the monolog of first-time hosts, Colin Jost <\/strong>and Michael Che<\/strong>!<\/p>\n But after the very first \u201cbit\u201d was about how \u201cdiverse\u201d this Emmys is, with so many black nominees, only two<\/em> won! So the opening just made it more obvious as the night went on.<\/p>\n And, on a semi-side note, I was just chatting with RuPaul<\/strong> on Saturday, and he did not have the bad skin, at all, that was showing on this stage. That\u2019s a whole lot of break-out to have occurred in just two days! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Great speech by Alex Borstein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Emilia Clarke<\/strong>\u00a0is so adorable.<\/p>\n I give Millie Bobby Brown<\/strong> credit first for wearing<\/em> glasses, and then not apologizing about it, as others have done.<\/p>\n That horrible old-fashioned riding outfit is what Amy Sherman-Palladino<\/strong> showed-up in… as a\u00a0nominee<\/em>???<\/p>\n But what a fun reference she made about her husband: \u201cYou are the Sid to my Nancy, mister!\u201d Scary, in a funny way. (But I\u2019m sure that only about three of us even got<\/em> it!)<\/p>\n I like Angela Bassett<\/strong>, but that was so classless of her to not know how to pronounce winner Rachel Brosnahan<\/strong>\u2019s name.<\/p>\n Funny guys Charlie Brooker and William Bridges. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I guess big earrings are back, but, even though I love them with my two thousand pounds of locks, they didn\u2019t really look good on anyone on this show. They were all swinging too much as the women spoke.<\/p>\n Aidy Bryant <\/strong>(another SNL<\/em>-er, of course)\u00a0and Bob Odenkirk<\/strong> were the funniest presenting duo.<\/p>\n The best speech of the night was from William Bridges <\/strong>and\u00a0Charlie Brooker<\/strong>, the writers of Black Mirror:\u00a0USS\u00a0Callister<\/em>, (which I don\u2019t think is a comedy show.) They were funny and charming, and William is adorable-looking. Charlie made me laugh when he was just walking up to the stage!<\/p>\n Taraji P. Henson, looking adorable! I have\u00a0never heard their names or laid eyes on them.<\/p>\n And how is John Mulaney<\/strong> considered funny? Ever.<\/p>\n Taraji P. Henson looks great. She just may be the<\/em> best dressed one there, period.<\/p>\n Who are those\u00a0Queer Eye<\/em>\u00a0fools to tell\u00a0anyone<\/em>\u00a0how to look?! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Keri Russell\u2019s boyfriend, winner Matthew Rhys<\/strong>, seems truly nice.<\/p>\n Why are Patricia Arquette<\/strong>, Ben Stiller<\/strong>, and Benicio del Toro<\/strong>, movie stars all, presenting a TV<\/em> award?<\/p>\n Anthony Anderson<\/strong> is so rude\u2014he didn\u2019t applaud even one second for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel<\/em> when they beat-out his show Black-ish<\/em> for the Outstanding Comedy Series award.
