So far, so good, for The Stranger I Love Most, Roger Federer. (And let\u2019s face it\u2014that\u2019s all I care about where tennis is concerned.) But so much else has been downright crazy. Nine of the Top Ten ladies seeds (including the very top one) have already gone out, and many other seeds have, as well, in both the Mens and Ladies competitions. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s ever happened before that only one Top Ten seed made it to the Round of 16. Wow. I honestly cannot believe what I\u2019m seeing!<\/p>\n
Back in the States, on my block to be exact, we had a terrible power outage during this worst-ever heatwave, so I don\u2019t have time to get fancy with this up-to-now review of Wimbledon; I\u2019m just giving you my brief raw notes as I took them as the tourney went along. I\u2019ll get more in-depth about all the goings-on in my Wimbledon Wrap-up next week.<\/p>\n

Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n This is a first for me, in all these years of tennis watching: Karolina Plishkova\u2019s hands<\/em> are tan, while her fingers<\/em> are not!!! It makes sense, since their fingers are curled around the racket, and the hands are exposed; I\u2019ve just never noticed it before.<\/p>\n Roger is rocking the shiniest hair ever!!! Loving it.<\/p>\n Serena Williams wore tights<\/em> in her first match!!! And long sleeves! In 90 degrees! What the heck was up with that<\/em>???<\/p>\n Roger Federer’s ultra-shiny hair. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Why does Bethanie Mattek-Sands (who\u2019s playing doubles here and also commenting a bit) keep leaving the \u201ced\u201d off the end of her words? Tonight she said someone was \u201cseed\u201d instead of \u201cseeded<\/em>,\u201d and later that someone was \u201ccool, calm, and collect\u201d instead of the correct \u201ccool, calm, and collected<\/em>.\u201d Maybe she hates a guy named Ed so she doesn\u2019t want to say his name. I can\u2019t think of any other reason for that bit of illiteracy.<\/p>\n Vika Azarenka is such a grown-up now. Her looks, especially her now-skinny body, have changed so much since she became a mother. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I wish the refs would stop calling Serena Williams \u201cMrs.<\/em> Williams.\u201d She\u2019s Miss<\/em> Williams!!! She\u2019s Mrs. Ohanian<\/em>, if they really feel the need to call her \u201cMrs.\u201d something.<\/p>\n Elena-Gabriela Ruse\u2019s dowdy Adidas outfit looked like she bought it at the 99cent store. It made the poor girl look like SpongeBob SquarePants!<\/p>\n TUESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019ve always wondered why many of the girls, even the skinny ones, have little bellies sticking out. But I just realized that it may be all the water they\u2019re drinking.<\/p>\n Nothing against Garbine Muguruza at all, but what is up with her underpants? They look like a diaper. It\u2019s yet another weird outfit from Adidas. (See Monday\u2019s last comment, above.)<\/p>\n Hunched-over Nick Krygios. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I\u2019m begging someone to tell Nick Kyrgios that he needs to fix his hunched-over posture before it\u2019s too late! He\u2019s only twenty-three, but he stands like an eighty-five-year-old. At least it makes me<\/em> straighten-up whenever I see him.<\/p>\n I love Marcos Baghdatis. What a nice guy. He\u2019s always caring to his opponents, win or lose. All<\/em> the players should be like him.<\/p>\n What is up with Maria Sharapova\u2019s armpit \u201cboob\u201d??? She\u2019s not fat at all, but I\u2019ve never seen that particular body phenomenon on any<\/em> tennis player before!!! I guess she\u2019s so focused on her game that she didn\u2019t feel it happening, or else she just didn\u2019t care about it enough to fix the situation.<\/p>\n WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n Serena Williams’ tights and long sleeves! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Commentators Chris Fowler and Chris Evert tried to make it like Roger Federer respects Serena Williams because Serena said that she\u2019ll<\/em> play as long as Roger<\/em> does. She said, \u201cWe\u2019re in it together.\u201d That doesn\u2019t mean that he<\/em> respects her<\/em>. Actually, that whole scenario was news to Roger, and when asked about it in his<\/em> press conference, he didn\u2019t say anything at all that would indicate he cares about her one way or another. He said her plan to do that is not necessarily a good thing, and that she was probably joking anyway. He said nothing about even knowing<\/em> her, let alone respecting<\/em> her. I hate when these idiots put words in athletes\u2019 mouths.<\/p>\n But this is<\/em> the best that Serena has ever looked, off<\/em> the court. (She\u2019s a mess on<\/em> it, though. And why does she keep wearing a filthy bit of cloth on her head???)<\/p>\n The best Serena has ever looked!!! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I\u2019ve tried to not complain about ESPN\u2019s annoying studio host, Chris McKendry, for these first three days, but I just can\u2019t take her illiterate mispronunciations anymore! She insists on adding an \u201cl\u201d to the end of \u201csaw\u201d and \u201cdraw!\u201d Who does<\/em> that??? How stupid is she??? And it\u2019s not like she hasn\u2019t been corrected about it\u2014I<\/em>, for one, have done so on Twitter a couple of times a year!<\/p>\n THURSDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n John Isner proved himself to be a bad sport in his match against Bemelmans, even though he won it, so now I\u2019m a bit against him.<\/p>\n Maria Sharapova’s armpit boobs, that I referenced above. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And so is Caroline Wozniacki. She came in as the #2 seed, but was beaten by Ekaterina Makarova. And then, in her post-match press conference, Caroline said she doesn\u2019t think that Makarova will go very far in this tournament. Nice girl, eh?<\/p>\n This was shocking, (but I\u2019m sure no one else even noticed!): Not one person asked for an autograph from either Johanna Konta or Dominika Cibulkova after their match on Center Court!!! I\u2019ve never seen that before. (And, even though she lost, Konta is one of their fellow Brits<\/em>!!!)<\/p>\n FRIDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n Garbine Mugurza’s crazy Adidas underpants, that I referenced above. Don’t they look like a diaper?! And a full one, at that!!! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Perhaps the worst sport of all in this tourney is Madison Keys. What a bi-atch. When she lost a crazy, but well-fought, match, she flew off the court in a nano-second, when at Wimbledon, you\u2019re supposed to wait for your opponent to walk off together.<\/p>\n Mary Jo Fernandez is the best commentator, by far. She\u2019s usually very fair and, even though jingoistic, not creepy about it, as the others are.<\/p>\n I finally have a favorite among the young \u2019uns. Actually, two<\/em> of them. Greek guy, Stefanos Tsitsipas, is adorable, and nice to his opponents, sort-of like Marcos Baghdatis, from neighbor Cyprus, is. (Now I know why everyone loves that area of the world!) And I\u2019m also into Mckenzie McDonald from America for two reasons. One is that he went to my beloved UCLA, and the other is that Roger chose him to practice with. And if he\u2019s good enough for The Stranger I Love Most, he\u2019s good enough for me.<\/p>\n SATURDAY<\/strong><\/p>\n A great shot of the set-up at Wimbledon. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n The most exciting match, so far, was the Third Round one between #1 seed (and #1 in the world!,) Simona Halep and low-ranked Hsieh Su-Wei from Chinese Taipei. It was so dramatic, and we never knew just who would come out the victor for the entire three sets. When Su-Wei hit a fault on her first serve at match point, and the audience gasped, she just smiled and acknowledged them, even though her very next serve would be one of the most important ones of her career. And then\u2026she won! She beat the #1, who had, coincidentally, just won the French Open three weeks ago. And the crowd went wild! So, good for her. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And then she did nothing I\u2019ve ever seen before\u2014when she signed the autographs after the win, she made sure to give each fan back his or her own Sharpie! (They usually just give the first one back at the end, to anyone who was around, with no regard as to whom it belonged to.) And she stayed there signing them for the longest time I\u2019ve ever seen.<\/p>\n And in her post-match interview, she was absolutely adorable! I guess she\u2019s who I\u2019ll be rooting for this week, all the way.<\/p>\n I also give Simona major props because, even though this was a pretty bad defeat for her, she still waited on court for her opponent so the two ladies could walk off together. Yes, that is<\/em> exactly what all the players are supposed<\/em> to do, but very few of them are good sports like that.<\/p>\n Now I just have to worry because it seems like all the women who would be able to beat Serena have been knocked-out in the first week! And, unlike some other players, he doesn\u2019t seem to feel the need to make believe he loves the questions these idiots ask him.<\/p>\n But I think he better start using some sunscreen, pronto. His left cheek looks like it\u2019s desperate for laser resurfacing!<\/p>\n I\u2019m so happy for Angelique Kerber to have come so far back after her fall from her glory days of 2016. (But she is wearing those Adidas \u201cdiaper\u201d underpants, too.)<\/p>\n It\u2019s so weird to see my name, Karen, on a male. Really<\/em> weird. I\u2019ve never experienced that before, in all my years. But Karen Khachanov is Russian, so I guess it\u2019s okay there.
