IKE\u2019S PLACE SANDWICHES<\/h1>\n

When I review restaurants, I\u2019ve often just eaten there one time, but with at least three other people, so I can give you a panoply of opinions.\u00a0 But, as I was just eating my hundredth (or so) sandwich from Ike\u2019s Place in Westwood Village, I realized that it\u2019s about time I tell you about this one, since I have so much experience in their fare.\u00a0 I also have several other opinions on it.\u00a0 But this time, we all agree on everything<\/em>!<\/p>\n

The Ike’s Place in Westwood Village, an area that’s near and dear to my heart.<\/p><\/div>\n

I first discovered Ike\u2019s at an event around town a few years ago, and after that, I was always happy to see them again. At those fetes, I usually had a chicken sandwich from them, which is named \u201cMenage a Trois.\u201d\u00a0 (All their sandwiches have catchy monikers.)\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know they had sandwich shops around town\u2014I thought they were solely caterers!<\/p>\n

My friends Alice and Lisa were usually the lucky pals I brought with me to those happenings, so they joined me in sampling the sumptuous sandwiches, and they also became fans of Ike\u2019s.\u00a0 One time I brought a vegetarian one home to Mr. X, (a sandwich, not a person,) and he joined us in our admiration.<\/p>\n

So when I found-out that they have an eatery right in my neck of the woods, near UCLA, I could not have been happier.\u00a0 And not only have Mr. X and I become regulars there, but I\u2019ve introduced them to several members of my posse.<\/p>\n

Our only problem has been deciding what to order!!!\u00a0 They have so many choices!\u00a0 And there\u2019s also a \u201csecret\u201d menu, so you\u2019ll have a lot to wade through when you go there yourself.\u00a0 (The entire menu is not on-line, either.\u00a0 So, plan on an extra fifteen minutes on your first visit to Ike\u2019s, to read all the combos on the boards.)\u00a0 Or you can put together your own creation, from the many listed ingredients.\u00a0 There are lots of vegan options, as well, but if you see a sandwich you like that says \u201cvegan turkey,\u201d for example, you can just tell them that you\u2019d like the real thing, (as\u00a0I<\/em>\u00a0do!)<\/p>\n

\"tmg-article_default_mobile\"<\/a>And these opinions are not just mine<\/em>\u2014they\u2019re the same across the board for everyone who\u2019s eaten them with me.\u00a0 This is a telling tale:\u00a0 My friend Thomas, from Rhode Island, was out here for a couple of weeks recently, and\u00a0we were lucky enough to spend a lot of time together.\u00a0 I took him to many really fun events, including play and musical openings, (with great seats and after-parties,) the opening of the Halloween event at the Queen Mary, a major sporting and music event at UCLA, (with all-access passes,) and a few other things that I\u2019m too lazy to type.\u00a0 And, of course, I introduced him to Ike\u2019s.\u00a0 The day before he was leaving, we were talking about all the fun we had.\u00a0 I asked what he had liked best, and without hesitation, he told me, \u201cThe highlight was the sandwiches!\u201d\u00a0 And he was 100% serious!\u00a0 On the busy day he was flying back home, he even went back there to get a couple more for the plane ride!<\/p>\n

So, the following month, when my fun friends, Lauren and Taylor, were visiting from New York City and the Hamptons, I, of course, took them to Ike\u2019s.\u00a0 They\u2019re used to fancier dining, for sure, but I had confidence in my choice of foods. And guess what?\u00a0 They loved the sandwiches so much that they even brought one to the ultra-upscale woman they were staying with, and she loved it, too!<\/p>\n

So I feel very comfortable recommending Ike\u2019s Place to everyone.\u00a0 By the way, you can sit on the petit patio to eat right there if you don\u2019t want to take them to go.\u00a0 And they have all kinds of treats that you can augment your lunch with.\u00a0 (I say \u201clunch\u201d because Ike\u2019s is primarily a daytime establishment.)\u00a0 But I usually just call my order in, and it\u2019s all ready for me when I get there, complete with green-apple-and-caramel lollipops in the bag!<\/p>\n

We all order different sandwiches, (Mr. X is partial to the \u201cRawson Thurber\u201d and the \u201cTony Soprano,\u201d both on French bread, as opposed to Ike\u2019s most popular Dutch bread,) but I whole-heartedly recommend the one I\u2019ve stuck with from the beginning. It\u2019s not on the board, so you just have to remember the name.\u00a0 I\u2019m keeping my fingers crossed that they\u2019ll re-name it the \u201cKaren Salkin\u201d one day, but for now, it\u2019s called \u201cGoing Home For Thanksgiving.\u201d\u00a0 It consists of turkey, cheese, and cranberry sauce, and I lose the sriracha, keep their famous secret \u201cdirty sauce,\u201d add lettuce and tomatoes, and have them put it all on their thick, home-baked whole wheat bread.\u00a0 Besides being delicious, this one is healthful, as well, which is such a bonus.<\/p>\n

Ike\u2019s serves their sandwiches hot, but they\u2019re good cold, too.\u00a0 By the time we eat them, they\u2019re usually lukewarm, which is perfect.\u00a0 I\u2019ve rarely finished both halves in one day, much less one sitting, so when I finish it the next day, I just microwave it for about thirty seconds and I\u2019m good to go.<\/p>\n

For those readers who are not in SoCal, there are many locations all around California and even some in Arizona and Nevada.\u00a0 I hope you all get to experience Ike\u2019s soon.\u00a0 And you can thank me later.<\/p>\n
