Well, the SAG Awards are always the most boring awards show of the season, but this one took the cake! So much about it upset me. I barely even live-tweeted it because I didn\u2019t want to get that upset to put it all in writing.<\/p>\n
But now that I\u2019ve calmed down a bit, I can share my many, mostly negative, thoughts here. Let\u2019s get started. First up is the show, in general.<\/p>\n
I hate that they had a host this time.\u00a0 That was so not necessary.\u00a0 And Kristen Bell<\/strong>\u00a0was awful! Thank goodness she only did her stupid little bits a few times, rather than all night.<\/p>\n And that she said this show is really for all the \u201cstruggling actors\u201d out there is beyond baloney. It\u2019s one hundred percent for the \u201cstars!\u201d Regular everyday actors do not receive nominations, (nor should they,) and not a one of them has ever been asked to appear on the show. It\u2019s all<\/em> about the stars! (Actually, this time, many of the presenters were sort-of obscure, but more on them in a bit.)<\/p>\n Can you name this mystery duo? Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And having females-only as the presenters was the stupidest and most pretentious thing ever. That stunt actually made me want to quit Screen Actors Guild!!!\u00a0 An awards show without cute males is pretty dull, if you ask me, (which you are by reading this!) Thank goodness they allowed the males to talk about their own films! At least these full-of-themselves females didn\u2019t wear all-black this time, thinking that will make everything okay. I felt like I\u2019m living on one of those Amazon islands, where the giant woman torture men, or something like that. Enough already!<\/p>\n To make the stage basically a no-males zone, they broke-out some of the most obscure actresses to present awards. I dare one hundred readers to name the two women presenters in the picture directly above! The answer will be at the bottom, if you want to test yourselves. (Even Mr. X could not do it.) [Clue: They’re both Oscar winners!]<\/p>\n Maya Rudolph.<\/p><\/div>\n Now let\u2019s go in order of the show running:<\/p>\n Could Maya Rudolph<\/strong>\u2019s dress be any frumpier?!<\/p>\n I feel bad that nominee Aziz Ansari didn\u2019t show-up because I assume it had something to do with that disgruntled former date of his who levied some nonsensical allegations against him. \u00a0That would be a travesty if that\u2019s why he missed-out on the fun of being celebrated for his nomination. [Note: This is why I hate this entire Hollywood witch hunt. It\u2019s hard to know just whom to believe anymore.]<\/p>\n I was happy that Julia Louis-Dreyfus won because Mr. X and I voted for her, but sad that she wasn\u2019t well enough to be there.\u00a0 I have a feeling she would have given her usual fun speech.<\/p>\n Frances McDormand.<\/p><\/div>\n Thank goodness Frances McDormand<\/strong> looked better than usual. She must have read my review of her on the Golden Globes!\u00a0 She colored her hair and put on appropriate attire this time. (Actually, how badly-dressed was everyone else when Frances had one of the nicest outfits all night???)<\/p>\n Just one of the many presenting duos to scratch our heads over: Molly Shannon <\/strong>and Leslie Mann<\/strong>???\u00a0 How did they choose those<\/em> two???\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know who the latter is! It\u2019s probably because they had to find more females than usual, even if they\u2019re not very famous, because of the stupid \u201cno-guys\u201d rule.<\/p>\n What a stupid speech by the man who accepted for\u00a0Veep<\/em>! He should be fired from the show just because of his stupidity!<\/p>\n At this point, I made a note, \u201cI can\u2019t take this women shit.\u00a0 I seriously can\u2019t.\u201d (More on those sentiments at the end.) \u00a0And them referring to actresses as \u201cfemale actors\u201d makes me sick.<\/p>\n Allison Janney.<\/p><\/div>\n I wore Allison Janney<\/strong>\u2019s big-shouldered dress…in the \u201980s!<\/p>\n I heard the writer of I, Tonya<\/em> say he did<\/em> write the role for Allison, but it\u2019s Tonya\u2019s mother<\/em>, for goodness sake\u2014he\u00a0had<\/em>\u00a0to write it!!!<\/p>\n I had no idea that Daniel Kaluuya<\/strong>, the star of Get Out<\/em>, is British<\/em>!!!\u00a0 OMG\u2014what a surprise! I love his particular accent.\u00a0 And he\u2019s an even better actor than I thought he is because I can usually tell when foreigners are trying to do American accents, and with him, I had nary a clue!<\/p>\n I\u2019m so glad that I was wrong about who would win Best Supporting Male, and that rightful Sam Rockwell<\/strong> won! I think it was the only<\/em> one I admired.<\/p>\n I can\u2019t stand Megan Mullally<\/strong>\u2019s nasality.<\/p>\n How does even one<\/em> person think that Alexander Skarsgard<\/strong>\u2019s performance was better than that of Robert DeNiro<\/strong>???\u00a0 Even Alexander<\/em> doesn\u2019t, which he referenced in his acceptance speech.\u00a0 He was so embarrassed by it that he couldn\u2019t even give a proper speech!\u00a0 But it was actually sort-of good–he just basically said thank you and got off.<\/p>\n OMG\u2014idiotic Kristen Bell just thanked Lady Bird<\/em> writer\/director Greta Gerwig<\/strong> for her story, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re all better because of it.\u201d\u00a0 Just who exactly is better because of Lady Bird<\/em>, outside of the actors in the film, who got to work and made money from doing so???<\/p>\n SAG President Gabrielle Carteris<\/strong>\u2019 speech was beyond pretentious!\u00a0 And she kept waiting for applause that never came.<\/p>\n Laura Dern’s awful hair-do! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Here\u2019s yet another strange duo of presenters because the producers of this show were so desperate for females: Rosanna Arquette <\/strong>and Marisa Tomei<\/strong>!\u00a0 When was the last time Rosanna worked? These two are not in the public eye right now, with zero projects between them, and they\u2019re not icons, either. But, of course, they did mention the recent \u201cMeToo\u201d campaign. The weird thing is that so many of these woman who talk about it praise tons of actresses who are involved, but not one of them, including this pair, has\u00a0mentioned Rose McGowan!\u00a0 It\u2019s interesting that they’ve all clammed-up about her, which seemed to happen right after I tweeted about her taking money from Harvey Weinstein for her silence, while accusing everyone else of not speaking-up.<\/p>\n Nicole Kidman’s back. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And why would Marisa wear her hair like that, with strands sticking-up all over the place?<\/p>\n But Laura Dern<\/strong>\u2019s hair is the absolute worst! I don\u2019t wear mine<\/em> like that to even just sit around the house!!!<\/p>\n Why does Nicole Kidman<\/strong> always wear backless dresses when she does not have a good back??? At least she put a mesh over it this time.<\/p>\n OMG\u2014Nicole Kidman just said that she has the flu!!! She should have stayed home in that case! People who go out with the flu think that they\u2019re being wonderful martyrs, but they\u2019re far from it–it\u2019s extremely selfish of them! Especially this year, when the strain going around is so deadly!<\/p>\n Laurie Metcalf on the right, with the great mesh on the top of her dress. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Very surprisingly, Laurie Metcalf<\/strong> wore the best mesh on a dress that I\u2019ve\u00a0ever seen, even on figure skating costumes!<\/p>\n When Rita Moreno<\/strong> came on, I thought, \u201cNow we\u2019re finally going to have some fun.\u201d\u00a0 But I was dead wrong\u2014she was incredibly goony and self-aggrandizing.\u00a0 But she is<\/em> eighty-six, and looks great, so props to her in that category.\u00a0 And she bared tons of skin, which, shockingly, did not look gross!!!<\/p>\n But she was in desperate need of lipstick.<\/p>\n Why would Morgan Freeman<\/strong> wear a baseball cap<\/em> to any<\/em> awards show, but especially to this one, where he was receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award, no less!!!???<\/p>\n Morgan Freeman, wearing a baseball cap to get honored! Shame. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n But thank goodness he finally had his teeth fixed when he got older.<\/p>\n More from dreadful host, Kristen Bell. This time, she said something about Meryl Streep like she was introducing<\/em> her, inspiring a standing ovation for Meryl from the entire assemblage!\u00a0 So she had to admit that Meryl wasn\u2019t even there<\/em>!\u00a0 And then, to cover for her faux pas, she quickly introduced Olivia Munn <\/strong>and Niecey Nash<\/strong> instead, which just about stopped the applause altogether.\u00a0 How uncomfortable for everyone.<\/p>\n And how creepy of Jason Bateman<\/strong> to have his wife sitting on his lap as his nomination was announced.<\/p>\n Finally, the first real honest moment of the evening! Niecy Nash told Olivia that she<\/em> wanted to be the one to announce Sterling K. Brown<\/strong> if he won, and when asked why, she emphatically replied, \u201cBecause he\u2019s black!!!\u201d<\/p>\n And, when he did<\/em> win, Sterling delivered the funniest line of the night: \u201cTo my white family, who\u2019s thankfully not like the family in Get Out<\/em>.\u201d [Note: I\u2019m proud to say that I predicted his future stardom in the first two paragraphs of this review almost two years ago, here: itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/theatre-father-comes-home-from-the-wars-parts-1-2-3<\/a>.]<\/p>\n Dakota Fanning. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n Then they brought-out someone named Kelly Marie Tran<\/strong>, and I wrote, \u201cAre they kidding me???\u00a0 Did they bring someone out of the audience to present???\u201d \u00a0So, I had to look her up, and discovered she was in Last Jedi<\/em>, which is a big film, so my<\/em> bad; I don\u2019t watch Star Wars<\/em> films. But why don\u2019t they announce what projects all these presenters are from, especially if they\u2019re sort-of obscure?!<\/p>\n And why is Dakota Fanning<\/strong> looking like she\u2019s home for the night, instead of on-stage presenting at an awards show?\u00a0 I don\u2019t even have words for her choice of those nerdy old-woman-pink glasses and her hair in the about-to-wash-my-face updo. (I loved Dakota Fanning when she was in I Am Sam<\/em>, but I have to re-think her as an adult.\u00a0)<\/p>\n I voted for Claire Foy, but I\u2019m shocked that she won.\u00a0 I guess SAG members don\u2019t like scientologists, Elisabeth Moss<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Kate Hudson.<\/p><\/div>\n Kate Hudson<\/strong>\u2019s dress is perhaps the ugliest one ever!<\/p>\n And her patter with her mom, Goldie Hawn<\/strong>, was inane.<\/p>\n The announcer called the This Is Us<\/em> cast a \u201cthirteen-actor ensemble,\u201d but just whom did they leave out??? And why? There are so many more cast members than that. That\u2019s not really fair to not count some of them. (They had some kids from the different ages on stage, so that alone would be nine actors! Then there are all the various family members! I count at least eighteen of them myself.)<\/p>\n By the way, I do watch that show, but I don\u2019t love it. I barely even like<\/em> it! So it\u2019s hard for me to understand its popularity.<\/p>\n Chrissy Metz. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n And, I\u2019m just saying what we\u2019re all thinking here, but it\u2019s hard to look at Chrissy Metz<\/strong>, knowing that she\u2019s dangerously obese. I\u2019m not fat-shaming at all; I\u2019m more worried about her health<\/em> than her looks<\/em>. It would be a shame if she died because people are tiptoeing around her weight! I\u2019m trying to help<\/em> her. I wish those close to her would do the same.<\/p>\n My heart\u00a0did not quite break<\/em> for James Franco<\/strong>, but \u00a0it did sort-of hurt for him. I give him tons of credit for showing up because he knew that, after those sexual misconduct allegations against him, he had no chance of winning, so he was just being a good sport. And his face when they cut to him after re-capping the nominations said it all. [Note, after the fact: And, just as I predicted, James was not nominated for an Oscar, which I think he would have been had this scandal not hit when it did.]<\/p>\n Halle Berry. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n I have rarely seen a more grateful, nor more deserving, acting award recipient, than Gary Oldman<\/strong>.\u00a0 And I loved his emotional speech.<\/p>\n This is the first time I\u2019ve ever seen Halle Berry<\/strong> look bad.\u00a0 She looked like she didn\u2019t have time to get ready.\u00a0 But I loved her dress.<\/p>\n I absolutely loathe that Frances McDormand kept saying \u201cMissourA!\u201d I don\u2019t care if the natives mispronounce their own state’s name for some unknown reason\u2014say it right, woman!!!<\/p>\n And, by the way, I predicted many of the winners, including Allison Janney, Nicole Kidman, Gary Oldman, Sterling K. Brown, Frances McDormand, Alexander Skarsgard, William H.
