Having no Williams sister there, same as last year, made it so much more pleasant to watch.<\/p>\n<p>So, <em>major<\/em> (get it?&#8211;it&#8217;s a Major tournament,) congrats to both US Open 2016 Champions\u2014Stan Wawrinka and Angelique Kerber! You go, people!<\/p>\n<p>And congrats, too, to the runners-up, Novak Djokovic and Karolina Plishkova. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While the ESPN commentators always said Angie might pull her win off, they barely ever mentioned Stan as a possibility. (And trust me\u2014I watched every second of their US Open coverage!) A time or two, one of them would say, \u201cWe\u2019re not even talking about Stan Wawrinka, and he\u2019s the #3 seed.\u201d And then they <em>still<\/em> didn\u2019t talk about him! Idiots. They never gave him a chance! But Stan is always really classy.\u00a0 I\u2019m so happy for him!<\/p>\n<p>I hope you followed my two weeks of tennis tweets <strong>@MajorCelebrity<\/strong>. If you\u2019re not a follower yet, this might be the time to do it because next Sunday, you just know that I\u2019ll be live-tweeting the Emmys! And you don\u2019t want to left out of the loop on <em>that<\/em> snark! (There\u2019s lost of lauding going on, as well. I\u2019m a yin-and-yang kinds gal.)<\/p>\n<p>Now here are my thoughts, (the ones that didn\u2019t make it into my many tweets,) during the second week of the tournament:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>TUESDAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I felt awful for Roberta Vinci to lose the quarterfinal, (she\u2019s the one who ousted Serena here last year, so she\u2019ll always shave a place in my heart,) but I wanted Angelique Kerber to win this whole thing, desperately. (For those of you who don\u2019t speak French, I\u2019m hoping I said that \u201cI love that there are so many Frenchmen in the quarter-finals.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>But I don\u2019t know for whom to root!\u00a0 I\u2019ve always liked Gael Monfils, but now I also love Lucas Pouille.\u00a0 But forget tennis\u2014Lucas should be a model!\u00a0 [I wound-up rooting for Monfils, though, because he\u2019s older, and has been around longer. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Oh no\u2014a moustache on otherwise pretty Caroline Wozniacki!<\/p>\n<p>I was so sad for Anastasija Sevestova. She had had this incredible tournament, and I really felt she could beat Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-final, but she turned her ankle in the third game of the match and could not recover. Such a shame, especially because she had actually retired from the sport for a recent year and half because of too many injuries causing her depression.<\/p>\n<p>It was very rude of the on-air ESPN peeps to show Wozniacki film of her losing to Kerber before, and talking about it, when she thought she was on set to discuss the win she had just had.\u00a0 They also made her discuss how great Kerber is! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Novak Djokovic is the luckiest person at this tournament. Actually, at<em> any<\/em> tournament! In the first five (of an eventual seven,) he got two retirements and a walk-over!\u00a0 (To the nescient, that means he barely played at all, to advance to the semi-final!) Why couldn\u2019t this have ever happened to Roger Federer?!<\/p>\n<p>I feel awful for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He was playing the best he had in a long while, made it all the way to the quarter-final, and got injured during the match, and had to retire. Shame.<\/p>\n<p>I used to think Novak spoke so well, but he said of Jo\u2019s retirement, \u201cThis is something that I\u2019m sure he didn\u2019t wish for, he didn\u2019t want this to happen.\u201d\u00a0 DUH!!!\u00a0 May I repeat D-U-H!<\/p>\n<p>Plus, he used to be more charming and entertaining.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t even do anything for the crowd who got shorted <em>twice<\/em> in his cut-short matches.<\/p>\n<p>This is off-track, but since they were there in the audience, I have to note that Hugh Jackman\u2019s wife is looking more like she\u2019s his mother than ever!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>WEDNESDAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I finally realized who Chris McKendry speaks like\u2014the phony baloney actress whom Kristin Wiig played in the <em>Password<\/em> sketch on <em>SNL<\/em>!<\/p>\n<p>Kei Nishikori\u2014wow! He beat #2 guy, Andy Murray, beautifully. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I can\u2019t believe that the stadium was almost empty for the Serena Williams quarter-final!\u00a0 Especially when the announcers try to make believe the Williams sisters are so beloved, especially in this country, especially in New York.<\/p>\n<p>Simona Halep did great against Serena, but I wish she had won. [It wound-up not mattering because the next girl got her.]<\/p>\n<p>I hate that the commentators make such a fuss over Juan Martin del Potro.\u00a0 That minimizes everyone else, especially his opponents.\u00a0 They totally excused Stan Wawrinka in the quarter-finals, even though he\u2019s won one more Major than Delpo, and a <em>gold<\/em> Olympics medal to Juan\u2019s <em>silver<\/em>.\u00a0 They made it like Stan was nothing.\u00a0 Shame on them! [And, I\u2019m happy to report, Stan won that match!] [And I\u2019m even happier to report that he won this whole <em>Championship<\/em>, as well!!! Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When they showed retired player Guillermo Vilas in the stands, (with awful hair now,) John McEnroe commented, \u201cI\u2019d like to see a little bit work done with that\u2026the hairdo.\u00a0 It\u2019s time to make a move on that.\u201d\u00a0 Then he added, \u201cLess is more, I can tell him from experience.\u201d \u00a0 Then after Brad Gilbert called it \u201cthe rough combover look,\u201d John said, \u201cpass the shoe polish.\u201d I agree, with it all, but that was pretty rude of them.<\/p>\n<p>I just knew that Delpo would have a hairy back!<\/p>\n<p>But, as much as I still hold a grudge against Juan (for beating Roger here&#8230;in 2009!,) I know that everyone is happy to have him back in the sport, after multiple wrist surgeries. When he was about to lose his quarter-final, the crowd was chanting his name, which made him start crying&#8230;on the court! That was sure something to see. At the end of the match, he stated, \u201cVery professional world-class work by Wawrinka to get this win here tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I hate the way they all make excuses for Serena when she\u2019s not doing well.<\/p>\n<p>Serena is just so rude.\u00a0 How can anyone root for her?!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>THURSDAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m so glad that Serena Williams lost her semi-final!!!<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve ever respected commentator LZ Grandson.\u00a0 He basically called-out Serena\u2019s coach for claiming that Serena was injured, and could barely even practice.\u00a0 LZ said, \u201cI watched her during practice, and she didn\u2019t appear injured.\u201d \u00a0 Then he added, \u201cShe didn\u2019t look like a player who was hampered going into the match today from practice.\u201d\u00a0 Good for him!!!<\/p>\n<p>Finalist Karolina Plishkova, (who beat both Williams girls,) is quite the talker.\u00a0 It\u2019s sort-of funny.<\/p>\n<p>It was weird\u2014Serena started her presser like a bitch, but then calmed down and got a bit better.<\/p>\n<p>I want to know Kerber\u2019s regimen to get such a great body after she was kind-of a pudge for so long.\u00a0 No one has even mentioned that fact, all year! (Well, they wouldn\u2019t quite say she was \u201ca pudge,\u201d but they could have mentioned she \u201ctrimmed-down\u201d or \u201cgot more fit,\u201d or something to that effect.)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>FRIDAY<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tom Rinaldi just said, \u201c<em>rout<\/em> to the semis,\u201d instead of \u201croutE,\u201d which is the correct word, of course.\u00a0 And he did it on purpose.\u00a0 I\u2019m so sick of these stupid commenters thinking they sound intelligent.<\/p>\n<p>Even though I always root again, I like Novak Djokovic. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I hate that the commentators and analysts kept ragging on semi-finalist Gael Monfils. They kept saying he wasn\u2019t even trying, and how shameful that was. I admit they all, of course, know much more about tennis than I do, especially the nuances of it, but I really didn\u2019t think that was the case, at all. I thought Novak was just too much for him on that day. [Note: I\u2019ll go back and re-watch that match one day, but for now, it all looked like normal tennis to me. Well, normal for <em>Monfils<\/em>!]<\/p>\n<p>The arena was pretty empty, which is downright sad for a men\u2019s semi-final!!!<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><strong>SATURDAY\u2014WOMEN\u2019S FINAL<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Angie is the first woman other than Serena to win two Majors in a season since 2007. Photo by Karen Salkin.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>As it was beginning, I realized another reason I wanted Stan to win\u2014because I don\u2019t watch the Aussie Open and The French Open, so I missed seeing him win his other two titles. (I just thought of another one\u2014Stan\u2019s win kept the record of his fellow Swiss player, Roger Federer, intact! Good countrymen work!)<\/p>\n<p>There was one black mark on the otherwise-fabulous men\u2019s final, and I\u2019m so glad that it didn\u2019t affect the outcome. The officials let Novak take a medical time-out&#8230;on <em>Stan&#8217;s <\/em>serve!!!\u00a0 That is a definite no-no in the rules! But even the tournament director, Brian Earley, allowed it! All the commentators, (on both channels who broadcast it, by the way\u2014yes, I\u2019m<em> that<\/em> nuts about tennis that sometimes I watch the double coverage,) were upset over it!\u00a0 What is wrong with the officials?!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24488\" style=\"width: 297px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-12-at-11.20.35-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24488\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24488\" src=\"http:\/\/itsnotaboutme.tv\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/Screen-Shot-2016-09-12-at-11.20.35-AM.png\" alt=\"Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, at the end of the Championship match.\" width=\"287\" height=\"276\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-24488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka, at the end of the Championship match.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>And on that delightful note, I\u2019m ending my <em>own<\/em> coverage of the 2016 US Open. I\u2019m so relieved that all my hard work on it, (the watching, tweeting, and writing here,) was not for naught. It all went my way for a change. And now, I\u2019m off tennis until next year, when, knock on wood, Roger Federer, The Stranger I Love Most, will be back!
