After being forced to slow down quite a bit, including a three-month stint staying in the house, because of my back, (I feel like Jennifer Gray, mentioning my injuries again, but I don’t want new readers to think I was under house arrest or something!,) I’m very grateful that I’m back to multiple nightly shindigs. Yay!

As this new week-end approaches, to give you guys a taste of what my social calendar is like, here are three events I managed to get to on a recent Saturday.

CUPCAKE TASTING

We started the afternoon at 2PM, with a sweet, in every way, cupcake event at the relaxed Coast Annabelle Hotel in Burbank. I love discovering new neighborhoods, and, although I’ve had acting, hosting, and guesting gigs at just about every studio in Burbank, I had never been in this particular area of that city before.

I always support functions that ask us to bring unwrapped gifts for distribution to hospitals, etc, and this being the start of the season, The Scott L. Schwartz Children’s Foundation, the hosts of the event, did just that.

The set-up looked very festive, with mini Xmas trees on the tables, and we were handed goodie bags and asked to sample cupcakes. My kind-of party! We were there at the very beginning, so I don’t know if any more cupcakes arrived after we left, but the three that we sampled from My Delight Cupcakery, located in Ontario, CA, were delish!

You’re not going to believe what my favorite was, because it sounds gross, but here’s their description of the Breakfast Cake: “A light and fluffy buttermilk cupcake loaded with bits of applewood smoked bacon, iced with a light, buttery maple frosting and topped with freshly crumbled bacon bits.” We had to go in another room to try it because I was sure I would have to get rid of it right away.

But, guess what? We loved it! My pal, Caryn, a maven of food-combining, exclaimed, “Oh my God! The meld of the tastes! And the crispy bacon!” (She’s not big on completing sentences.) And I’ve been craving it for breakfast almost every day since.

Caryn also loved the “salty and crunchy” Snickers bar-esque Vanilla Almond Salted Caramel, with the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle being my favorite.

We left still unsure of the purpose of the event, but we got to bring gifts to children and become aware of a delicious cupcakery, so we didn’t even care why we were there. And the sugar high kept us going to the next destination, which was back in my neck of the woods.

SPAPHILE LAUNCH

We segued from Burbank over to the Century City mall. (Well–it was quite a long segue, but as a show biz chick, it’s a requirement for me to use that word every now and again.) (BTW–if you don’t recognize the word from the spelling, look it up. It’s very educational.)

A new website that features spa deals, spaphile.com, was having their launch party on the patio of Pink Taco, although the curious thing is that the eatery wasn’t providing food! No matter–the point was to celebrate, meet the adorable people who run the site, and have a couple of mini spa treatments.

Aveda Institute had some of their students giving hand and shoulder massages and we also got spray tans on our face. (It was way too cold to expose our bodies, even for beauty.) There were a couple of other services, but it got too dark for the people doing them to see, so we missed out on the rest.

No matter–we had to get going to the third fete by then anyway, and had time to just wish Renee and company best of luck as we exited, although I was really wishing we had time for dinner somewhere on the way because the first and last events of the day were sugar only, and this one was no food, except for some chips. Not my finest event-planning, so just know that I usually slot in some real food events, if you’re judging this as an example of a typical week-end day for me.

GALERIE LAKAYE ANNIVERSARY

We ended the day the way we began it–with sweet treats. Galerie Lakaye, a very interesting Haitian art gallery in a private home, celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a dessert party. Twenty years at anything is a big deal in this town, and possibly anywhere, so I was more than happy to help them celebrate.

Carine Fabius presided over the evening with her usual grace, and set the table with a holiday-esque mélange of cakes and cookies. I’m always interested to see the new art she’s acquired from her homeland, and just what rooms she’s laid it out in. There’s always a visual, no matter where you find yourself.

So, congrats to her, and I look forward to celebrating her next decade.

THREE L.A.
