<\/a>This is how it works, according to the press release: \u201cNow through October 6, visitors to www.FreeNightLA.com<\/a> will be able to submit an entry to win up to five pairs of complimentary tickets to productions throughout the region. On October 9, entrants will be notified which tickets they have won, and then will attend performances during the second half of October.<\/p>\n\u201cThis year is notable in that L.A. Stage Alliance is piloting a new \u2018enter-to-win\u2019 version of Free Night, instead of the previous version where theatres offered specific allotments and audiences raced to claim tickets. The \u2018enter-to-win\u2019 version takes the time pressure away, and allows patrons to receive as many as five pairs of tickets instead of just one pair.\u201d<\/p>\n
The program will be giving away thousands of tickets to hundreds of performances that you can attend from October 14 through 31. I checked-out the offerings myself, and while there don\u2019t appear to be any at L.A.\u2019s bigger theatres, there\u2019s plenty to choose from. (Ninety-seven shows total, as a matter of fact!) I\u2019m not familiar with any of these current productions, but I can tell you which shows I particularly like in general, and which I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

My likes: The Importance Of Being Earnest<\/em>, Barefoot In The Park<\/em>, and Waiting For Godot<\/em>. (That last one\u2019s not fun, but important for references for the rest of one\u2019s life,)<\/p>\n My dislikes: God\u2019s Favorite<\/em>, Beehive<\/em>, Tale of the Allergist\u2019s Wife<\/em>, All my Sons<\/em>, and especially The Goat <\/em>and Hedda Gabler<\/em>.<\/p>\n Ones I would see if I were going to be in town then: Lilly\u2019s Purple Plastic Purse<\/em>, Helen Mirren in Phedre<\/em>, Joe Bologna (always funny) and Renee Taylor in Sort Of A Love Story <\/em>and Bell, Book, and Candle<\/em>.<\/p>\n Now matter what production you see, though, you can\u2019t go wrong for the price! And, if possible, why not bring along a child or two? It\u2019s never too early to develop the next generation of theatre-goers. (It looks like there are actually a few specifically for kids, in fact, such as Jack and the Beanstalk<\/em>.) Just please teach them proper audience behavior before you venture out! (I\u2019ll try to print my column on that<\/em> subject prior to the October 14th<\/sup> start date, so please definitely check it out. Especially if you\u2019ll be sitting near me<\/em>!)<\/p>\n
