They’ve just become sort-of weird to me. The same people win year after year, which makes sense–the same people vote on the same actors in the same roles, so why would the winners change?

And you don’t get judged on your body of work, supposedly–it’s just one episode that your publicists, agents, studios, etc. submit. You can’t even get nominated if you don’t submit to be. That’s weird in and of itself.

It also seems to me that in the past decade or so, more cable actors and programs get nominations and wins, maybe because the voters want to look like they’re more intelligent than to watch regular network channels, or something like that. (Since it’s the Television Academy that are handing them out, it’s only right that cable is included, but now that trend seems to have run amuck.)

This episode of Castle was nominated for Best Prosthetic Makeup!

When I looked-up the nominees for this column, I was truly shocked at just how many categories there are! How’s this one?: “Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Miniseries, Movie Or A Special.” The list continues like that. (As I’m writing this, my mind is agog with all the potential categories: Best Gay Playing Straight, Best Straight Playing Gay, Best Former Movie Star Relegated To TV Roles, Best Child Actor Who Doesn’t Deserve To Be Slapped For Being Full Of His Or Herself.)

I do applaud the change to six nominees in each of the main categories, (from the usual five,) because there are about a zillion shows on nowadays. (With rarely anything of quality to watch, sadly enough.)

There are a few nominations that made me a happy, such as Jim Parsons, the best comic actor on TV, for Big Bang Theory, and some not so much. Here are my thoughts on some of both:

Jim Parsons, the actor most deserving of a win.

–If Jim doesn’t win this year, just because more people want to think that they’re in with Alec Baldwin, I just may boycott the Emmys next year. No other comic actor’s task even comes close to his; he has to memorize all those long technical speeches, and then sell them like he does. He has never been less than brilliant, even for a second.

–Tony Shaloub for best actor in Comedy series? Enough already! The only person who watches Monk is my mother, and her favorite show is Matlock, so that should say it all.

–While I watch Glee all the time, I don’t think anyone, outside of shoe-in Best Supporting Actress Jane Lynch, is a particularly good actor on it–just good singers. So, it’s strange for any of them to be nominated in “Best Acting” categories. Next year, maybe in addition to the “prosthetics” category, they can add a “Best Singer.” Oh, then it could be “Best Singer On A Comedy,” “Best Singer On A Drama,” “Best Singer On A Dramedy,” “Best Singer On An Actual Music Show,” and on and on.

–I love all the actors on Modern Family, so I feel awful that all of the grown-ups were nominated except for Ed O’Neill. I was never a fan of his before this show, my favorite comedy in years, but he deserves it just as much as the others. Actually, more then the red-headed guy who plays his son, and the beautiful woman who plays his wife. And the blonde woman who plays his daughter, too, actually.

–Christine Baranski is wonderful in just about everything she does, so I’m rooting for her for The Good Wife. (And I’m already upset that she’ll lose Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series for Big Bang Theory to Betty White for her guest hosting stint on SNL. I love Betty, but Christine was absolutely brilliant on the former.)

–Thrilled that Jay got bupkus, but a tad sad that Dave did, also.

–Do enough voters even watch TV movies and miniseries??? I guess not, by the fact that there are only two nominees for these actual shows this year! (The shows themselves–not the actors, heaven forbid.)

Okay, my interest level in this topic has come to an end. But I’m sure I’ll get a second wind when the actual show rolls around next month, so look for my post-Emmys musings then. At least the Emmys are always good for some good old ragging!

EMMY NOMINATIONS THOUGHTS I never really care about the Emmys, which even I’m a little surprised about.
