Hi Cmich.

As you can see, I wrote about the yin and yang of the show, as I try to do with everything. I can totally understand your points, but I found there to be a lot of good in the show, as well, and wanted to point those numbers out. I'm sorry if you were disappointed in the show, but I just gave my impressions of the show, as best I could.

Thanks for reading and commenting!

My family and I had become disillusioned with Stars on Ice in recent years. But after reading your generally glowing review, we decided to take a chance and see the show at the Honda Center. You were way too kind!
Just for the record, I don't want to denigrate COI at all. We faithfully attended COI from 1988 until the very end. We love seeing the eligible skaters too, but personally our preference is the smaller cast with a group of skaters that you get to see many times throughout the show. while we enjoy seeing the skaters shine in their own right, we love the interaction they have with each other in the group numbers.

Hi Gail.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. It sounds like you really know your skating shows!

I agree with every one of your points! I hadn't even realized that there were performances on the Dancing With The Stars nights, so I'm sure that a lot of ticket buyers were really disappointed about seeing the cuurent Olympic Champion.

Your point about the cast being a mix of amateurs and pros is well taken--that's why it was so great when we had both shows. SOI had it's own little family flavor and we were happy to see the same cast year after year, while welcoming exciting newcomes to COI each season. I think that that's what SOI was going for this year, but it's a shame that the advertising gave the old-timers short shrift. I hadn't realized that.

And I especially agree with your take on not enough group numbers. I remember that one of the few times Mr. X accompanied me, he pointed out how much fun Sergei Grinkov was having on the ice with the other skaters, and he had never seen Sergei that happy before. It makes the audience feel that we're in on the action. I think the reason they don't do them as much anymore is that this group has had no real leader since Scott Hamilton, and then Kurt Browning, left.

So, it is what it is, and I'll continue to support SOI because we live-ice-skating-lovers unfortunately don't have too many choices nowadays. And since they now change-up the cast every time out, we can look forward to the one they come up with next year.

Thank you for your report. We are long time SOI fans, & have been attending the show since 1993. We attended our shows on the east coast. While we enjoyed this season's show very much, I have a few big concerns. I hope that the three SOI (Japan/US/Canada) DON'T overlap next season. We enjoy seeing our favorite international skaters too (from Japan, Canada, Shen & Zhao, Ilia, Katia, etc.). I believe every cast member should get to do two individual programs. I also want to see more group numbers, something that made SOI unique from COI, and for that you need a full time CORE cast. While I was thrilled that Evan deservedly won the OGM, I felt it was wrong for SOI to feature him so prominently in the posters/miniflyers for this season's tour. I read and post at the SOI website, so I was completely aware of whom was supposed to perform for each show as the information is given on the website show by show, but the casual attendee who doesn't do that and is ONLY there to see Evan would be set up for a big letdown if he/she had tickets for a show from Sunday to Tuesday. I understand the concept of "striking while the iron is hot," but I felt that Evan should have waited until NEXT season to do DWTS. I have no problem with Sasha, Tanith & Ben appearing on the posters/miniflyers because they did the whole tour. However I think it is a slap in the face for Todd, Mike, & Yuka not to be pictured/mentioned at all in those posters and miniflyers. The same is true for the full time eligible cast members who are doing the whole tour (Meryl & Charlie, Jeremy, & Alissa). Did we want to see the Stars of Vancouver? Of course, we did, but we love the pros, and they should not be ignored! Since Evan chose to do DWTS, I feel TPTB should have invited Johnny Weir (even though I haven't cared for some of his public comments to do the dates that Evan was unable to do because of his commitment to DWTS. He is a wonderful skater, but it's possible he may have burned some bridges with some of the things he has said). As far as I'm concerned, I hope that TPTB let Todd, Yuka, Mike, and Sasha skate with SOI for as long as they'd like!
