HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2018

My Holiday Gift Guide is a tad later than usual this year, but I know that many of you are always looking for last-minute gift ideas, so that makes it right on time.

And holiday gift-giving does not end with Christmas Day—there are always New Year’s presents, especially for hosts and hostesses, and for pals who don’t celebrate denominational holidays. And guess what??? With life moving so fast these days, Valentine’s Day will be here before you know it!

So, I hope these suggestions help now, but if you can’t get them on time for Christmas, please mark this page to refer to throughout the year.

Let’s get started:

Cuisine Natural Bamboo Steamer—As I’m assuming most of you may know by now, I’m not a big cook. Or even a little one, really. Yes, I do come up with the occasional fab recipe (which you can always check-out in my Recipes section of this e-zine,) but I’m mostly too busy (and, okay, too lazy) to do much cooking. But recently, a guy pal, who’s as clueless in the kitchen as I am, suggested this simple steamer, and because I’m such a fan of Asian dumplings, I figured I should check it out for myself. It’s easy enough, especially because it comes with its own sheets of separator parchment paper, which, trust me, really help. I can’t tell you any more about it now because I have to go steam some more dumplings!!! (And if I can do it, you can, for sure.) www.cuisinenatural.com

Evan’s Scent Candles—I’ve long known photographer, and all-around creative artist, Eamonn Tracy, so when I learned that he is now making beautiful candles, I was thrilled. They’re much in demand at this time of year in his native Ohio, but at the behest of many, he’s making a select few of the candles available to all of us! They’re hand-poured soy, in wonderful holiday scents like Apple Cinnamon, Pumpkin Chai, and my fave, Mistletoe! (I hope that last one works the same way as the real thing! I’ll try it out on Mr. X and let you know.) And every part of the presentation, including the glass, is made in the USA! Even better, they’re so affordable that you’ll want a few for yourself! The best part about gifting these handmade candles is that a portion of the proceeds are donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in memory of Eamonn’s late sister, the adorable Evan Tracy, after whom his company is named. (And, in case you didn’t figure this out for yourself, “Evan’s Scent” is a play on “Heaven Sent,” which is so appropriate for this angel.) He’s too busy to create a website at the moment, but you can order at this email address: sheila2012@gmail.com. And tell him that I sent you, so he knows you’re not some crazy stranger!

Cailyn Make-up Primers/Serums—Face enhancers are always a welcome gift, for both sexes. These make-up primers double as serums, so that eliminates a step from one’s beauty routine, which is a much-appreciated time-saver. But the main reason that they’re in my Gift Guide is because of their beautiful packaging, which means they come camera-ready (as they’re hoping to make you be, at all times.) The daytime one comes in a pink bottle adorned with white flowers, and the nighttime one is housed in a similarly embellished dramatic black bottle, with boxes to match. This one is a no-brainer, except for which one to gift! www.cailyncosmetics.com/face/face-primer

<img class="size-medium wp-image-37780" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/IMG_5592-e1545356742810-300x158.jpg" alt="The exterior of the Pasadena Civic at holiday time.
Theatre Tickets—These can be purchased in a nano-second, which makes them as appreciated by the givers as they are by the recipients. I think that most people don’t even realize how expensive theatrical entertainments have become, so a gift of tickets can be a godsend to many. And, if like Mr. X, your friends don’t want to have any more material items come into an already over-crowded house, tickets are the perfect present. Especially during the holidays when there are so many choices of fun events to see. No matter where your gift recipients live, I’m sure there’s something fabulous for them, especially in New York and Los Angeles. I just reviewed three really special shows here in LA, which will be gone pretty quickly, so check-out my reviews to decide among them. And maybe make a day or night of it, by grabbing a bite someplace close to the theatre before or after. I can’t imagine a more fun treat to give someone you care about. (Here are those review links: It’s a Wonderful Life at the Pasadena Playhouse: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-its-a-wonderful-life-a-live-radio-play; The Wonderful Winter of Oz at the Pasadena Civic: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-the-wonderful-winter-of-oz-panto; and Love Actually Live at the Wallis in Beverly Hills: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatremusic-love-actually-live.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-37777" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/48372062_570448816738083_4403690995779108864_n-225x300.jpg" alt="The Rhinestone Reindeer at Back on the Beach.
Restaurant Gift Certificates—Who doesn’t love to dine-out at an eatery and not have to reach into one’s own wallet? So a restaurant gift is a great way to go. You can always take a friend out for a holiday meal, but it’s perhaps a tad more generous to gift someone a certificate so they can go on their own, with the dining companion of their choice. Either way you do it, for my fellow Angelenos, I still have the same two perennial faves that I have had for many years now, both in Santa Monica. First up is Back on the Beach, which is, as stated right in their title, on the beach! The other is Back on Broadway which is twenty blocks inland. Either way, you cannot go wrong.

Happy Gifting!!! (And perhaps save a thing or two for my January 14th birthday!)

GIFTS I NEVER NEED TO RECEIVE EVER AGAIN

With so many gift-giving holidays upon us, (Hanukkah begins already on Monday, followed by Christmas, and then comes the most important one of all—my January 14th birthday!,) I figured I should list the items no one needs to get me ever again.

The EZ Scrambler.

That may sound spoiled of me, to assume that anyone would ever give me presents to begin with, (and trust me—few do!,) but I’m just trying to save everyone the money and hassle by eliminating so many possibilities.

But, I promise you, I’m tickled pink to receive any gift from anyone at anytime! I love seeing what people pick-out for me, even if they’re a tad nutty. For example, for one of my birthdays, Lynn Redgrave gave me an e-word scrambler, which was an “As Seen On TV” product. First of all, it was a tacky item from the get-go, and worse, as most of you know by now…I hate e-words! But I loved the craziness of the product, so I still have it. Even crazier is that, in my overfilled abode, I know where it is!

For a different birthday, a very wealthy, handsome, and hip man gave me a gallon-container-size statue of…a cockroach! From a very expensive and happening store. My friends and I screamed when I opened the box. The card stated some romantic sentiment, which was even nuttier than the bug! But it’s one of my few long-ago bday gifts that stands out in my mind to this day.

A version of my “Multiple Heads” planter, but mine was even worse!!!

And then there was the infamous “Multiple Heads.” That was my gang’s name for the weirdo planter that a male pal gave me for yet another birthday! Besides the unattractiveness of it, the bigger news is that…I don’t do plants! Shockingly, the friends who were here when I opened it vied for me to regift it to them. The winner was thrilled, and one of the “losers” still bemoans not getting it. Go figure.

But, I swear—I really do like good presents better than these nutty ones. Even so, as the girl who has much, if not everything, in life, I really do appreciate the creativity.

All that being said, just so there’s no confusion in the future, (hopefully the near one,) here’s a list of items I absolutely do not ever need! And I guess I’ll find-out which of my friends are supportive enough to read INAM by if they still give me the products on this list. (Clever, eh?)

So here goes:

ITEMS I NEVER NEED

Gold Jewelry

Wallets

Skin Creams (except ones for the neck!)

Lip Balms

Socks

Nail Polish

Make-up of any kind

Shampoos and other hair products

Writing instruments

Notebooks

Nightgowns

Robes

Slippers

Vitamins and supplements

Blankets

Towels

Cell phone accessories

Books

Alcohol, of any kind (because I don’t drink! Duh.)

Hand creams

Tee-shirts

Caps

On the flip side, you’ll never believe the one thing I really, really, really do need. I’ll give you a second to think of it.

After an hour of searching on the internet, I still could not find an image of a bowl that even comes close to the one I broke! But this one makes my mouth water, so here it is.

Ready? It’s…bowls! Of all kinds—serving, cereal, and especially big salad ones. (I just broke my giant flat-ish salad serving bowl a few weeks ago, and I can’t find another one like it!)

And I can never get enough of silver jewelry and high-end dark chocolate candy. And good knives. (Not to use on Mr. X, I promise, though I have threatened. But that’s a story for another time.) And, of course, services are my fave gifts ever. I need them all (massages, manis, pedis, facials—you name it,) and even better—they don’t take up any room in my house, for Mr. X to yell about! So it’s a win-win-win, meaning a no-brainer for the giver, (and easy to send for them, too,) something I love, and Mr. X is happy about it.

Chocolate souffle, and whipped cream. Yu-um!

I have to leave you with one of the most creative gifts I’ve ever received. It was from the classiest couple I’ve ever known, the late publisher of Los Angeles Magazine, Geoff Miller, and his actress/author wife, Kathryn Leigh Scott. This was truly a gift for the girl who has everything. It was a set of four—count them, four—ready-to-cook-for-ourselves chocolate soufflés from Bistro Garden, and…a carton of heavy whipping cream to whip up fresh when we make the soufflés! I can’t tell you how much I appreciated that gift!

I know that many of you have similar “not a gift for me” lists, so please feel free to share them in the Comments section below. I’d really love to see them.

BEAUTY PRODUCTS THAT WORK #4 (WHICH ARE ALL PERFECT MOTHER’S DAY GIFTS!)

I recently realized that it had been a long while since I brought you one of my Beauty Products That Work columns. People always ask me what cosmetics I’m loving, but I just hadn’t discovered that many stupendous products in a bit. Until recently, that is.

I’m happy to report that I now have a whole bunch to share with you, and just in time for last minute Mother’s Day gifts, too! (And actually for Father’s Day, as well—most of these recommendations are unisex.)

So let’s get to them, in no particular order:

Butter London Melt Away Cuticle Exfoliator—Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been nail obsessed. And I’ve always given my cuticles extra special attention. I’ve never been able to understand when others do not do the same for themselves. So, when I grew-up and started having manicures, the nail techs have constantly complimented me on not only my nails, but my cuticles, as well, because they usually don’t need to do any additional grooming on them. But during my recent siege of pneumonia, my cuticles were the last thing on my mind. So, needless to say, when I recovered, and tried to push them back, I was horrified at how unpliable they had become. Enter this amazing product, and in under three minutes, my cuticle health was back even stronger than the health of the rest of my body! I’ll never be without it again.

Woda Clay and Charcoal Mask–This twice-weekly mask is touted to give you “beautiful skin in an instant.” And I’m here to tell you—that is exactly what it does! Mr. X even noticed, the very first time I used it. My face really did “look clearer and more radiant,” as it claims on their site. And the best part for all of you is that, since I’ve had a few others try it, as well, I can affirm that it really is perfect for all skin types. I think I’ll actually go use it again right now! Thanks, me.

SpaRitual’s Inhale Nail Polish Collection—Not only is this new line vegan, (which an increasing number of people seem to care about,) but the reason I’m now a fan of these beautiful new pastels is because they need no base or top coats! And for uber-busy peeps such as myself, that’s a godsend! And they’re here just in time for summer, when not only are these shades in vogue, but with so many outdoor activities, (swimming, volleyball, sidewalk sales,) polish needs to be changed more often. So, to be able to skip a couple of usual steps is such a pleasure.

Nudestix Concealer Pencil and Clean-Up Pencil—These are two items I cannot live without! First up, let me tell you about the concealer. I don’t know what I’d do without this! Several years ago, I had Mohs surgery for skin cancer—on my nose! Let’s just say that my surgeon was far less than an artist, and left a crazy depressed white scar. (But the scar is less depressed than I am over it!) It’s taken me years to perfect just how to disguise it, and since I was an artist when I was young, I put that thinking cap on and realized I had to lighten-up the negative space around the hole! This concealer pencil (I use Medium 4) is the perfect shade and consistency to do the trick! And it’s the easiest make-up tool to use! I just draw it into the dark space, as with a crayon, and smooth it in some more with a flat brush, and I’m an artist all over again! (Only, since the canvas is my face this time, it’s much more important than a picture of, say, a clown!) After I do that, I also dot it over any tiny dark spots on my face, and a bit under my eyes. I don’t even wear face make-up over it! A swoop of bronzer and blush, and I’m as good as new! And I always keep my Nudestix Clean-up Pencil handy, for any little make-up messes that need removing throughout the day. You just dab the error with it, (which is usually lower lash mascara in my case,) and poof—it’s gone! It’s a make-up bag necessity.

Gerard Cosmetics Metal-Matte Liquid Lipstick in Dreamweaver—My friends and I practically fight over this lip color, which makes your lips just about glow! We all want to wear this one all the time, and we actually can do it even when we’re together because it looks a bit different on everyone. The entire line of metal colors is fabulous, but Dreamweaver is special because it imparts a beautiful and sexy golden shimmer, while still being a neutral. I have a feeling that it looks great on all lips, but I like to think it’s just mine.

Pur Minerals Hello Bright Eyes—Trust me when I tell you that I own very many eye highlighter pencils and creams. But this pink one is the best of them, by far! It really does brighten the eyes. You put some under the brow, and dots in the inner corners of the eyes. (Not in them, of course, but on the skin on the outside of the corners. Duh.) Then you blend it in with the attached sponge tip, and voila—you look refreshed! No one seems to ever realize that I’ve usually been up overnight!

Parodi Hand Cream—Back to the hands. I’m amazed, in a bad way, when I see people with such dry hands. When I had a recent manicure from a young nail tech, she could not stop exclaiming over my soft hands; she said she had never felt ones like them before. How sad for the rest of the women of Los Angeles. Don’t they know that hands always give away their ages? So, for those sad-phalanged peeps comes this duo of hand creams—one for day and an intensive one for bedtime—that were created by a former hairstylist from Switzerland. She realized that she and her salon co-workers had their hands in water for a good part of the day, so they needed to start protecting them from the drying effects of that task. And now you all know how to do that, as well. You’re welcome!

And that’s it for this time. Trust me, my Review Panel and I try dozens of beauty products every week, and while most are good enough, all of the ones on this page are above and beyond. I hope they work as well for all of you, too. And if you’re looking for last-minute Mother’s Day gifts this week-end, I’m sure every recipient will be thrilled with any and all of these.

[Note: Unlike many supposed “beauty bloggers,” who get paid to tout some companies, and therefore don’t give a hoot about if they’re being honest with you, I do not accept money for what I write in this column, so I’m just telling it like it is! Enjoy!]

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2016

In this especially trying year, I know that a lot of us have not gotten much into the holiday spirit yet. But you guys had better buck-up and get with it because both Christmas and Chanukah are just a little over a week away!

So, if your mind is still spinning too much from recent national events to concentrate on figuring-out just what to get for everyone on your list, I’m here to help. I have a few suggestions that are fabulous, even if you’re not struggling for gift ideas.

These recommendations are all tried and true, some by just me, and others by my review panel, as well. They’re all so good that you may even want to get them for yourself, as well! So, let’s get to them:

COSMETICS

Gerard Cosmetics—I love absolutely everything this company has to offer, especially their lipsticks. And they come up with something new every year. Their recent-addition Metal-Matte Liquid Lipsticks give you the shiniest lips ever! (They have staying power, too.) All six shades are perfect for the holidays, and beyond. I declare that every girly-girl must own at least one for New Year’s Eve! And, if you act soon, you can get the entire set of them in a special limited-edition designer tin. What a wonderful gift that is!

One fun sidebar about another Gerard Cosmetics product: I was recently with a friend whose face looked extra-glowy. I looked closely, and noticed tiny sparkles. I immediately had to know what she was wearing, and, to my surprise (and delight,) it was the BB Plus Illumination Cream from this very company! (I guess great minds do think alike!) So, if someone’s getting me a gift this year, this just might be the one to consider! Just sayin’. www.gerardcosmetics.com

THEATRE—ON BOTH COASTS!

Tickets to a fabulous presentation are always thoughtful gifts, for all occasions. People on both coasts, and everywhere in-between, I’m happy to say, are very lucky this year to be able to share these wonderful shows with their loved ones this holiday, and shortly after:

A Cinderella Christmas—This holiday show at the Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles is a classic British Christmas “panto,” which is a comedic musical take on a famous fairy tale, and is tons of fun for both kids and adults. This year’s choice is Cinderella, and it could not be more entertaining, especially the evil step-sisters. (If you missed my recent review of it, you can read it here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatrechildren-a-cinderella-christmas.) I highly recommend it to every single person reading this, no matter your age. I guarantee you’ll leave with a humungous smile on your face. Give the tickets as gifts to your whole family, and start your new tradition of seeing a panto every year. But hurry—the run ends on January 8! www.pasadenaplayhouse.org

Cirque Du Soleil shows–This year I have not only one but two Cirque Du Soleil productions to recommend, one in New York, and the other in the rest of the country! Here’s the skinny on them:

TORUK, The First Flight—The most creative people in the entire world now bring us this new show, which is inspired by the hit film, Avatar. I’ve never even seen that film, but I always look forward to everything that Cirque du Soleil has to offer. (And blue is my favorite color!) They’ve never let me down, so the people you give these tickets to will love you forever. It will be in Los Angeles just from January 12-15, 2017, so these gifts will be right on time. Making it even more fun for us Angelenos is that it will be at The Forum, which used to be our main venue back in the day, and has had a recent resurgence. But don’t despair if you’re located elsewhere in the country—this show will be traveling to at least seven other cities, and three in Mexico, as well! (And maybe everyone seeing Toruk should join me in seeing the film it’s based on before the new year. Christmas Day movie party, anyone?) www.cirquedusoleil.com/toruk

Paramour—For my east coast peeps, there is not one gift I consider better than a ticket to see this incredible Broadway show! (If you missed my review of it a couple of months ago, you can read it here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/new-yorktheatre-paramour-a-cirque-du-soleil-musical.) It truly is the best Broadway musical I’ve ever seen in my entire life! And that is absolutely no hyperbole. And here’s some more great news—the run is open-ended, so you can give the gift of tickets to Paramour now, but go see it when the holiday madness has died down. It’s a win-win. www.cirquedusoleil.com/paramour

ARTWORK

Shaz Justice Fine Art–A gift of artwork is always appreciated, especially when it’s as fabulous as the work of artist Shaz Justice! Her images are always adorable and a bit outside the box. She does commission pieces, but also has many paintings ready to go. Her designs are so distinctive and creative and special that absolutely everyone will be thrilled to own one. And a perk when giving gifts is that Shaz’s artwork is very, very affordable! She uses mixed mediums and digital format, and will always work with her clients to come up with exactly what they want. But, judging by the pieces I’m featuring here, you can just go to her website and choose something ready-made for her to send to your gift recipients right now! I know that many celebrities, especially rock bands, are fans of her work, so everyone who gets one will be in great company. www.shazjustice.com

THE GIFT OF EATERY IDEAS

Zagats New York City Restaurant Guide—It was a sad day when we all realized that our beloved Zagat restaurant bible no longer published a Los Angeles guide. My friends and I had been addicted to it for decades now. We waited each Fall for our own copies to arrive, like Ralphie waited for his Red Ryder Air Rifle in A Christmas Story! So, imagine my delight when, on my recent trip to New York, I noticed that local retailers there were still selling New York City editions! Even though I’m no longer bi-coastal, I just had to have one.

I noticed all the updates right away, beginning with the newly-designed cover. The logo is different, and the burgundy color is now sort-of a strawberry. The scoring system is all new, as well. I usually hate change, but I’m eager to check-out everything that the 2017 guide has to offer. You can, too, on www.amazon.com.

EATERY CERTIFICATES THEMSELVES!

Photo courtesy of Back on the Beach Cafe.

Back On The Beach Cafe–Since, as I’m sure you all know by now, I’m restaurant-obsessed, one of my favorite gifts to receive is a certificate to an eatery. The denomination is not even important—the thoughtful act is what truly counts. Of course, you can do this gift in any city in the world, but for my Los Angeles peeps, there’s no better place to send your recipients than Santa Monica’s Back On The Beach Cafe! It’s one of the most popular breakfast and lunch places in the whole city! And what could be better after, (or during!,) the hectic holidays than to sit on the beach, dig your toes into the sand, and enjoy a delicious repast!? Absolutely nothing else I can think of. As a matter of fact, I think I may head down there right now. Happy Holidays to me! (You can read my in-depth review of the place here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/dining-back-on-the-beach-cafe.) www.backonthebeachcafe.com

GIFT BASKETS

DVD Gift Baskets–This is one of the most fun gifts I’ve ever received. I was in Brooklyn with my little mother when I received my first one, and she was so tickled pink by it that I have total confidence recommending it to everyone. And you don’t have to leave your house to give it. It’s a gift basket that features a DVD of a movie or TV, along with candy selections and little goodies that support the theme of the DVD you order! So clever. You can choose everything that goes in the basket, especially the film, or just have them surprise you. Since awards season is upon us, I recommend ordering a current film, such as the very humorous true story, Florence Foster Jenkins, which is getting tons of nominations. (I’m into only upbeat films at holiday time.) Or, perhaps even better, order the above-mentioned Avatar, and then take your loved ones to see Toruk, the Cirque du Soleil show based on it, that I recommended in one of the above sections! What a fun, fabulous tie-in gift! www.dvdgiftbaskets.com

CHARITY

I can’t single-out any one charitable organization to give to this holiday season; I’m just reminding you that a donation in someone’s name is an option. Most of the gifts I’ve given for the past five years are of a charitable nature, rather than actual physical gifts. But I know not everyone wants to do that. And most people do look forward to see what actual items their loved ones pick-out for them, which I totally understand. But giving to a charity in someone’s name can never be wrong, so please keep it in mind.

And here’s one last general tip—if you’re planning on shopping on-line, today, December 16 is “free shipping day,” practically across the board. So, better get cracking on those gifts today! Good one, eh?! Happy gift-giving!

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE 2015

Even though I usually don’t laud myself for my columns, I must say that this is perhaps our best Gift Guide ever! And just in time for this year’s early Chanukkah, as well as Christmas and New Year’s. (And January birthdays, too. Hint, hint. Did anyone mention the 14th?!)

Several of us worked on it—I had experts in every category, and a bunch of my Review Panel members and I got together to sample some of the items, to make sure we would choose just the right ones to recommend to you.

We came up with an exclusive list, with only one item in each category, (except for theatre tickets, because both events are so fabulous that we couldn’t choose between them!,) so that we’re bringing you only the best of the best. [Note: I’m apologizing in advance for the plethora of exclamation points; I needed them to show just how superlative all our suggestions are.]

There’s something for everyone on here, and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Your recipients will all be thrilled! (And maybe even treat yourself to one. Or two. Or all of them!)

Let’s get to them:

FOR JUST ABOUT EVERYONE IN THE WORLD, ESPECIALLY FOODIES

My Cup of Cake Belgian Chocolate Soufflé Cake—Lauren is the one we can all thank for this discovery! I had never even heard of a chocolate soufflé before I came to LA as a teen-ager. Then I discovered the sumptuous dish at a famous, grown-up eatery, and I immediately knew that there could not be a classier dessert. So, now, all these years later, when someone sent me a couple from My Cup of Cake to microwave in my own home, I could not have been more thrilled! Mr. X and I “cooked” them up, and we were both soooo impressed with how delicious they are! And each one serves two. He said, “These are just about the perfect gift, aren’t they?”

This is how it works: The ingredients are all there for you, right in the cup. All you do is open the packets, mix it all up, then just microwave the cup for a minute or two, and voilà–perfect chocolate soufflé! If you’re one of those microwave-fearers, you can “bake” them in the real oven instead. It takes longer, and you miss the fun of watching the soufflé rise over the cup, but it’s almost equally delicious that way. (We both thought that it tasted a tad better in the microwave, but that may just be because we got to eat it sooner.) The basic Belgian Chocolate one is perf, but there’s also Chocolate Salted Caramel, (which we both loved a teensy bit more.) And gluten-free-ers, have no fear—there’s one for you, too! Another bonus is that, if you give them enough notice, they’ll put your company logo right on the cups.

But even as wonderful as the taste of the soufflés is their staff. The orders are filled by men and women with disabilities, from Madison Cortland ARC. There’s even a card in the package with a picture of the person who did yours. I love that! And every My Cup of Cake purchase supports their excellent work. Nothing is sweeter than that! www.asprinkleandadash.com

FOR THE GLAMOUR GIRL (OR GUY—WHO AM I TO JUDGE?)

Gerard Cosmetics Lipsticks—Whenever I need a gift for a girly girl, (like moi,) this fabulous line of lipsticks, (with great monikers, by the way, like “London Fog” and “Mystic Moon”) is my go-to, always to rave reviews. Everywhere I go, people stop me and inquire about either the gorgeous color on my lips, or the unique, lit, mirrored case that houses the glosses from this company. (It happens to my friends who use them, too.) Trust me–every girl appreciates getting a gift of beautiful make-up, and you can’t go wrong with any of the lip items from Gerard. A bunch of us tried some of the new ones out, and especially loved…all of them!

For the holidays, our Panel suggests the new Hydra-Matte Liquid Lipstick in glittery red Ruby Slipper, or sensual nude Aphrodite. (And we all found-out that this Hydra-Matte formula definitely stays on for quite awhile!) [Note: A couple of us sparkly girls like to top them with the company’s lip glosses, for extra shine. Our favorite is “Divalicious!”]

And here’s a bit of a special personal story–I always mourn the loss of my favorite teen-age lipstick, Toast. I found a down-to-the-nub tube (or two) among my precious relics when I was cleaning-out my house in Brooklyn last year, but, of course, I would never use a cosmetics product that old! Though I must admit, I was tempted–I had never found anything like that shade. Until now, that is! There are several similar hues in the Hydra-Matte and lipstick lines from Gerard! These are perfect year-round lip shades, and I almost fainted when I tried the Buttercup! It was so much like my beloved Toast that I almost cried!!!

Best yet, there’s always some great deal on their site, or something free with purchase. So, you can pick-up something for yourself, while you’re gifting others! If that’s not a win-win, I don’t know what is! www.gerardcosmetics.com

FOR THE HOLIDAY PARTY-GOER

Chella—This brow and skin care company has so many great products, (many of which I’ve used for a few years now,) that we INAM gals had trouble choosing just one to suggest. (My poor brows are in desperate need of a visit to their Brow Bar, which I hope to do soon. And I’ll tell you all about it, of course.) But when we discovered their Anti-Fatigue Eye Mask Kit, it was all over for us. This is exactly what we all need to get through the many holiday soirees looking our best!!! And each box also contains a sample of their eye cream, to complete the experience the right way.

A few of us tried-out the eye masks over Thanksgiving, and we all saw eye-opening results. (Pun not intended, but it works.) Even Mr. X noticed that I looked less tired, for the entire day and night! The kit is very easy to use. And fun, too. You just use the liquid activator to saturate the eye pads right in their little tray, and then apply them under the eyes for fifteen to twenty minutes while you get otherwise ready. (I usually put my purse and wardrobe together, and then write for a bit.) When you remove the pads—voilà! You look like you haven’t been partying hardy all season! And each box comes with a sample of Chella’s wonderful Eye Cream, so you can add a drop of that for extra protection. Each set of eye masks are one-time use, so the box of four comes in really handy. It’s such a thoughtful gift for your hard-partying (or -studying or -working) pals! It shows that you’re paying attention to their lives. (Or at least their in-need-of-refreshing looks!) www.chella.com

FOR THE CULTURE, AND FUN, LOVER

I just had to put two in this category, because they’re equally fabulous! And tickets to a wonderful show are always perfect, and appreciated, gifts, for everyone. Both shows will be in Los Angeles for the holidays, but those of you around the country will get your chance to see the second one at some point.

Peter Pan and TinkerBell–A Pirates Christmas—This musical at the Pasadena Playhouse is the latest in the series of British “pantos” that the Lythgoe family brings us every December. They’re shows that take a classic fairy tale, and make it very funny, for both kids and adults. All the songs are modern, hip, recognizable music. Even Mr. X loves these pantos. They’re totally full of non-stop laughs, fun, and surprises. And having this year’s show be based on Peter Pan makes it that much more special. For me, anyway. But who doesn’t love Peter Pan?! (Except Captain Hook, of course.) I promise—this is not just a show for children that adults will like, too, nor just a show for grown-ups that children might like. It’s a show that everyone will love! You’ve got to trust me on this one. [Note: My review will be up right after the opening on the 9th. But I can tell you right now—it will be glowing!]

And get there early, if you can. The Pasadena Playhouse courtyard becomes a Winter Wonderland, with holiday crafts and activities, and sometimes even photos with Santa. December 9—January 3 www.pasadenaplayhouse.org

<img class="size-medium wp-image-20834" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/17037_1060kurios_quebec-9546_mediumresolution-199x300.jpg" alt="Photo by Martin Girard.
Cirque Du Soleil’s Kurios–Cabinet of Curiosities—I have never seen a Cirque du Soleil production that was less than spectacular, so I have high hopes for this edition. And Kurios is even too big for their former Santa Monica Pier space; this time, the famous blue-and-yellow Grand Chapiteau [big top] will be setting down stakes at Dodger Stadium! I can’t imagine anyone on earth not being thrilled with a gift of tickets to this show. It’s so much more than a show, though—Cirque du Soleil is an event! One which all my pals look forward to. To me, it’s either a fabulous romantic date, or the best family fun ever. [Note: My review of this one will also be published shortly after the opening on the 9th. And I have a strong suspicion that this one will be effusive, as well. That’s why I’m recommending them as holiday gifts! Duh.]

And for my non-LA readers, the show will travel to at least five other venues around the country after this, so check the site below for those dates. In LA December 9-February 7. www.cirquedusoleil.com

FOR NEW MOMS (AND NON-MOM FASHIONISTAS—LIKE ME!)

The Oemi Parkside Diaper Bag—I must confess: I often use a quilted diaper bag as my purse! And I get many, many compliments on it! But my new mom associate, Lila, (who just had her third baby, so I consider her to be an absolute expert in these matters,) has a much better (leather) one than mine, which she absolutely loves. So, for many reasons, we’re suggesting hers to you.

Here’s Lila’s take on it: “This is the perfect diaper bag! It’s sub-title should be ‘fashion meets function.’ Fashionable moms can carry it without sacrificing style because, in addition to it being uber-functional, it’s great-looking! (Trust me on this one–as a mom of three very young ones, I see diaper bags all the time. Sometimes even in my sleep!) The Oemi Parkside Diaper Bag features a gorgeous classic look; housed in luxurious leather, the shape is perfect, and it’s big and roomy. The impeccable quality is seen throughout. There are two deep pockets on the exterior, for bottles/phone/keys or the like, and five interior pockets for all your baby necessities. And, of course, it comes with a changing pad. (Non-mom Karen asked what that was for!) And, because it’s crafted of leather, this is a gift that will last way beyond the infant years–when the diaper use fades away, it will then double as a purse, a work bag, and even a carry-on travel bag.”

Lila also pointed-out, “Here’s a bonus: Oemi is a charitable company that gives back. They donate their Signature Sleepers every winter to low-income and homeless mothers of infants, and also give a percentage of sales to several charities. You gotta love supporting these types of businesses, especially at this time of year.” www.oemibaby.com

FOR THE KIND FASHIONISTA

Debbie Lee Cuff Bracelet—You don’t really have to be a kind person to buy this bracelet for someone, nor to wear it, but I love that a portion of the sales goes to Speak Out Against Bullying, Inc. So, that’s a bonus, especially during the holidays when we should be a bit more charitable, but the bracelet itself is fabulous! This is another of Lauren’s finds, almost by accident. She was wearing one to a classy ladies lunch recently, and even though she’s always rocking a bunch of jewelry, this big silver cuff, with a set of raised “lips” on it, really stood out.

Each one comes with your choice of lip colors. Since the design is to help the above-mentioned anti-bullying campaign, I chose black lips because I feel they represent the evil words of a bully, to remind people how prevalent bullying is. (Also, because most of my wardrobe is black! I never said I’m not shallow anymore.) But for fashion purposes, the red is also great. Actually, all the colors are! And you can choose for the cuff to be crafted in gold or gun metal, if you prefer those to silver. There’s a cute touch to the gift, too—each piece of jewelry comes in an adorable blue-with-white-polkadots organza bag. And they’re all made right here in the USA. So, with this one gift, you can be kind, fashionable, and patriotic! www.mostelfinejewelry.com

FOR THE PERSON WHO HAS EVERYTHING

Blue Can Water—Water may not be your typical gift, but this one may wind-up being the Gift of Life, if ever your area is involved in a natural disaster. It’s super-thoughtful. Bottled water has less than a year’s shelf-life. But Blue Can Water (which is housed in an aluminum can–duh) can stay good and safe for fifty years! OMG! And in earthquake-or-hurricane-prone areas, such as Los Angeles and the entire East Coast, that’s almost a necessity! Mr. X and I keep two cases of Blue Can on hand at all times, just in case. I also keep a few cans in my car because if they wind-up in there for awhile, (which is dangerous with bottled water,) I have no qualms about cracking one open when necessary. Plus, the pretty blue cans look really cool. (Especially if you’re blue-eyed and vain, as I am.) People always ask me about them. I think they’ll look especially appropriate as Chanukah gifts, (or table accoutrements,) where the hue of the exterior will fit right in with the decorations!

With this gift, you also know you’re doing a good thing because Blue Can is a supporter of the Emergency Water Foundation. That non-profit organization helps public institutions, business organizations, schools, and public offices with the preparation and compliance of their Disaster Awareness Plans, including the pre-staging and management of emergency water supplies. So, this water is a gift to everyone! www.bluecanwater.com

And that is it for this year. Whew. Happy gift-giving! I hope we made it easier for you.

MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS 2015

I’ve found some wonderful new items this year that are perfect for Mother’s Day Gifts! (Several are excellent for Father’s Day, as well! Two birds with one stone.)

And they’re actually just right for every mom, no matter if she just had her first child or her twelfth! They’re every-age appropriate, and I’m sure any one of them will be a much-appreciated present.

I personally know how well-received they’ll be, because…I received them all this past year! That’s correct—I’m recommending only gifts I received in the mail, that made me squeal with delight when I opened the packages! So, I can honestly tell you—recipients will love each and every one of these gifts!!! There’s truly something on this list for everyone!

So, let’s get to them already!!!

My Candy Basket—As I’m sure you already know, we just did a give-away of these fabulous gift baskets this week, so we know that at least sixteen of you will be receiving these gorgeous candy gift baskets for Mother’s Day! (The winners are being notified today.) If you didn’t win one from INAM, you can still be a winner by ordering one yourself. These gorgeous, affordable baskets are full of delicious, creative, beautifully-packaged, and even kosher, candies! (Several of our contest entrants mentioned how they appreciated that last fact.) Headquartered in New York, (and in my beloved hometown of really-happening Brooklyn, in specific,) they deliver anywhere in the US. And in a very timely manner, which is great for the candies. www.mycandybasket.com

Gerard Cosmetics Lipsticks and Glosses–I love all of them! The colors are just perf, especially for spring! (And this is from the same people who brought us the teeth whitener, Whitening Lightening, so you know that they know how to make the whole mouth area look good!) The gold, tapered lipstick cases are beautiful, while the gloss wands light-up, and the exterior features a perfect-sized mirror! My friends and I wear these all time, and most find it hard to choose just one favorite. The ideal combo for me is the almost-natural-lip-color Rodeo Drive lipstick, (which is the perfect name for a gift!,) topped with Pink Frosting gloss. If you love them all, too, and can’t decide which to get your gift recipient, you can choose the “Just 4 You Bundle,” and pick any four lip products at a very discounted price! (And, there’s a coupon code for a bundle of five glosses on their site right now, as soon as you log on!) www.gerardcosmetics.com

Shaz Justice Fine Art–I have a couple of young single mom pals, who are fans of things that are not the norm, to me, at least. I gave one two suitcases worth of baby gifts when she was preggers, and out of it all, her favorite thing was a baby cap with a skull on it! So, thinking outside the box for moms like them, I highly recommend original art by Shaz Justice. I know that many celebrities, especially ones in rock bands, love her work, so I’m not the only one recommending it. I believe she has lots of ready-to-go pieces, in both originals and prints, but she also takes commissions. Shaz usually paints very distinctive and pretty cartoony girls, but with little skulls or blood someone in there. Her work is sooo creative, and owning a piece of art, especially an affordable one, is always something special. Shaz works in mixed medium, (mostly a combination of graphite, ink, Prismacolors, and glitter,) and also in digital format. (Artists and fans will know what all that means. I just know it’s all fabulous!) I promise, a work of hers will be a treasured gift! (And, art lovers, keep an eye out for her up-and-coming artist teen-age daughter, Bradleigh. All I can say of her is “wow!”) www.facebook.com/OfficialShazJustice

Slim Uno Portable Manicure Kit–Since I was a little girl, I’ve been obsessed with my nails. I used to write about their care in my diary every night. If you know someone like that, too, this is the gift for them! (And I wish it so for many males, as well. They should all know better by now!) It’s a battery-powered sturdy “pen” that has attachments for filing, buffing, and even cuticle-pushing! You really don’t need anything else for your nails. And it comes in attractive designs on the outside, that should each please someone. The polka-dot one makes my mouth water! (And, if you order by April 30th, you will receive $5 off any purchase over $35 by using the code “WDPR5.”) www.violife.com

Faby Fabulous Mini Collection Set—While we’re on the topic of nails…As I was telling someone recently, girly items make such great Mother’s Day gifts, especially for fashionable moms! This set of four mini bottles of pretty polishes has just come to America from Italy. And, since Italians say “Ciao” with their hands, you know their nails just have to look good! I decided to share my quartet with some of my reviewing panel chicks, and the consensus was that the blue bottle (with the lengthy moniker “Plastic Jewels and Neon Lights,”) looks adorable with tiny polka drops of the snow white “Sugarful” on top. And the bottles are the perfect size for travel. To Italy, perhaps? (If you order on-line by Mother’s Day, use code “MOTHERSDAY2015” to receive 10% off.) www.fabyusa.com

Imperial Books—If you have parents like mine were, academics all the way, this New York bookshop has the gifts for you! (You can read my full write-up on them here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gift-ideas-imperial-fine-books.) My mother would not care about girly things, (except for dolls, dolls, dolls!,) but, as an English teacher, she loooved books. The ones from Imperial are mostly leather-bound sets with fine bindings, and, trust me—every single one of them is an impressive gift! You don’t have to be on the East Coast to partake of these treasures; just look around their catalog (which is on their site,) and order on-line or by phone. www.imperialfinebooks.com

Thanks To My Mom—Speaking of books, here’s a good modern one. It’s the mother version of the famous Chicken Soup For The Soul series, entitled Thanks To My Mom. It’s compiled by country singer Jo Dee Messina, and contains over a hundred personal stories from famous people and plebians alike, some anonymous, and some even deceased. It shows just how much moms mean to all of us, which everyone needs to remember. (Of course, if she’s a hip or rock ‘n roll mom, she’ll also enjoy Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Story Behind the Song, a book I’ve bought for many people since it came out a few years ago. Any hip dad will love it, too!) www.chickensoupforthesoul.com

And that’s it! I hope this list is helpful, and I promise, they’re all perfect gifts for someone you know. Happy gift-giving, no matter for what occasion!

IMPERIAL FINE BOOKS

If you skip over some of my other columns, (the ones that don’t involve celebs, sports, or gossip,) please do yourself a favor and read this one! It’s about a fascinating store in New York, Imperial Fine Books. I never even knew a place like this existed! Books are so very precious. I’m always worried that younger people won’t realize it.

And this is something collectors, interior/set designers, sophisticated people everywhere, or ones who are just thirsty for knowledge, should really know about, especially with so many holidays coming up this Spring.

Here’s my personal story with this antiquarian bookshop:

On what was a particularly hard day for me recently, the doorbell rang, very unexpectedly, and Mr. X answered it, bringing up a giant box. He hates when big things come into the house, so we were both prepared to be upset with what we thought were unsolicited contents.

When we finally got through layers and layers of tissue picture, we discovered three not-big-but-solid objects, wrapped in thick brown paper. We could not imagine what that wrapping was hiding.

When we opened them, we were overwhelmed!!! Someone had sent me a gift of a trio of classic, vintage, leather-bound volumes, all from Imperial Fine Books in Manhattan. I actually broke down and cried just looking at all the gloriousness! And I knew right away that I had to share my discovery of this place.

Not only are the books gorgeous, but these selections are all so perfect for not only me, but Mr. X, as well. And one even ties into my precious little mother. I’ll tell you that story in a minute, but first I want to point-out that even the packaging shows how much care this establishment takes with their wares.

This is what that kind gift-giver sent me, with knowing me for only a fleeting moment in life:

Wuthering Heights—by Emily Bronte. Published in 1945. Illustrated, and bound in three quarters red morocco.

Alice In Wonderland–By Lewis Carroll. (Duh.) Published in 1899!!! Illustrated. Bound in the full red morocco.

Canterbury Tales– By Chaucer, of course. Published in 1934. Illustrated. Bound in full green morocco.

Bibliophiles will understand how significant the binding of the books is. I just appreciate the beauty of them. In such a digital world, what an absolute treasure these volumes are.

And I love that they have personal inscriptions from the original purchasers to the recipients. That meant so much to someone at the time. I cannot even explain what this selection means to me.

Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite stories of all time, (I love Catherine’s quote, “Ellen, I am Heathcliff!,”) and Alice in Wonderland is a classic children’s book that I’ve never even fully read, so this will be my chance. Mr. X is excited about them all, as well. And here’s the amusing story of how one of these novels ties into my mother:

Years ago, when May Rose Salkin was considered the unofficial Poet Laureate of Aspen, the big news station from Denver came to do a story on her one summer because there was an insane controversy over her cute poems that always appeared in the daily newspapers. The piece they did on her was a delightful one. The whole town got a kick out of the story, and my mother was adorable and charming on it. But what came immediately after the segment was even more special to me.

As a segue, the news anchor said something to the effect of, “Now on to a story of another literary endeavor. A rare edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales was discovered…” I don’t really remember anything after that because I was absolutely floored that they were comparing my mother’s pleasant little ditties to a rare edition of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales! That was just mind-blowing!

The inscription in this edition of Wuthering Heights. Look at the gorgeous handwriting! Photo by Mr. X.

So to now own a rare edition of that book myself means so much to me. Every time I look at it, I think of my funny little mother.

So back to present-day. After I calmed down after crying over these new gifts, I researched Imperial Fine Books, and knew immediately that I had to let you all know about it. I only wish that I had known about this store a few months ago, before my siblings just trashed the hundreds of old and rare books that were in my deceased parents home in New York! I want to prevent other families from doing that wasteful thing. If I had known of this bookshop, I would have brought all my family’s books to them.

The person who sent me these gifts chose all novels for me, which is perfect, but, although Imperial Fine Books carries mostly leather-bound sets with fine bindings, they also specialize in children’s literature, illustrations, color-plates, ones on travel and Americana, and all fine and rare books in every field imaginable. They can even assist with the rare, hard-to-find first editions!

My parents would have gone nuts in there!!! Speaking of that, any of these volumes would be perfect gifts for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day. Or anybody on any day! I can’t even tell you how much this gift means to me, and I’m someone who always loves receiving just shallow gifts, such as make-up, clothing, and other basically trivial items. This was one of the most creative choices for me ever!

I can’t wait to visit Imperial Fine Books on my next trip to New York, which I hope will be soon. My desire to see this shop may just be getting me to the East Coast quicker than planned!

VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT IDEAS 2015

At the very least, send a beautiful card, like this one from JacquieLawson.com.

Valentine’s Day is upon us once again. And this year, I’m getting you all prepared for it a bit early, so you’re not caught off-guard. Since it’s exactly one month after my birthday, I’m an expert on gifts at this time of year, because loving presents, (and gestures,) are fresh in my mind.

So, here’s my annual list of gifts that are just right for all types of loved ones. I included one or two in each category. Most of these will give the giver as much joy as they give the receiver, (especially if its something you can share, like several of these ideas are, especially the last three) which is that way it should always be!

You may notice that I didn’t do any specific ones for men this year. That’s because Mr. X eschews “man” gifts, feeling he’d rather choose his own ties, shirts, wallets, etc. So, I’ve resorted to what my family used to do for my father on all occasions—candy! And that’s really what Mr. X likes best anyway, but would never buy for himself. So, look away, Mr. X—the first suggestion is for you! (And most are uni-sex anyway.)

Here goes:

For the Sweet-Toothed One:

My Candy Basket—These custom-made candy gift baskets are not only delish, they’re absolutely gorgeous! I received one recently, and, no fooling, it took Mr. X and me a week to open it because we wanted to just admire the stunning packaging for awhile! You can design your own, or just go with an already-created one. There are so many beautiful color-schemes to choose from, and the variety of candies is overwhelming. And, for those of you to whom this matters, it’s all Kosher! www.mycandybasket.com

For the Soul-, Good Luck-, Peace-, and Happiness-Seeker (that about covers it, doesn’t it?):

Soulva Sticks–This is one that everybody should have in their house. It’s a bundle of organically-grown herbs that you burn to purify your surroundings. Since Mr. X and I first discovered the Soulva in August, we use ours often. Whenever something starts to go a little bit wrong, Mr. X suggest we burn it. And the instructions are easy, and even better, fun to follow. We actually have a good time doing everything probably even more than directed. And it works! We seriously always feel better after! Someone put it to me like this: “It gets rid of the bad stuff to make room for the good stuff.” Now, if only they could make one for the body, that gets rid of the fat to make room for the muscle, I’d be all set! www.shopwithvanda.com

For the Fashionista:

Kathy Fielder Collection—It was hard to choose just one item from Kathy Fielder’s eclectic boutique, so I chose two! First up are the faux fur vests. My colleague, Alice, (who’s also a stylist,) went nuts when we discovered them in person, and raved, “They look great with everything and anything! It’s a great winter go-to item, no matter what climate you live in! You can dress it down with jeans, or way up with a dress. But it’s stunning no matter which way you go!”

I’m more inclined towards Kathy’s monogrammed clutches. You order it with your own two initials on it, of course. That way, if Lindsay Lohan (or any other sticky-fingered fool) tries to steal it at a club, (just sayin’,) you can prove it’s yours! www.kathyfielder.com

For the Beauty Junkie:

Chella Eyebrow Stencils—I came upon this cosmetics company this summer, when a make-up artist used one of their eyebrow stencils on me. That was in July, and the shape lasted until last week! And this is six months later! That’s a first for me! She told me that it was really easy to use, too, so I guess it makes the at-home user practically a pro! (I don’t own the kit yet, but, if Mr. X doesn’t get this hint, it’s so affordable that I’ll just order one for myself, pronto.) www.chella.com

For the New York Foodie (and visitors to that confusing city):

Zagat—Sadly, this year the famous food guide company made one for only New York City, rather than the twenty or so other cities that were also in their stable. (And, trust me, we sorely miss them in Los Angeles!) But the good news for the residents of (and tourists in) the Big Apple is that you can still get the new 2015 one for that city. I seriously can’t tell you how jealous am. They’re always available in the few bookstores left in the world, and also on-line. Happy eating! www.zagat.com

For the Los Angeles Foodie (especially ones who like to do good at the same time!):

Planned Parenthood’s Annual Food Fare—This one is not to be missed! You can’t do it on actual Valentine’s Day, but receiving tickets to this upcoming charity food-fest will certainly make the recipient love you! It’s being held at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica on Thursday, March 5, 2015, and you have a choice of the daytime session (11am-2pm) or the evening one (6:30-9:30pm,) so it fits all of our busy schedules. There will be over one hundred restaurants (and caterers) participating, so, no matter what one’s palette craves, there’s sure to be something for everyone. And at the same time, your tickets will be helping to support the Planned Parenthood Los Angeles Guild; they provide financial, and emotional, support for those who need that assistance. So, it’s a win, all the way around. And you might even run into me there! (At the Food Fare, not Planned Parenthood, although I wouldn’t mind volunteering at the latter.) I’m definitely going to the Food Fare; I just don’t know if I’ll be looking-up from the food tables long enough for you to see me! www.pplafoodfare.com

For the Los Angeles Culture Lover (which is my personal favorite category):

Russian National Ballet Theatre—There’s nothing better than Russian Ballet to me, in the dance category. And you don’t have to give the recipient tickets for another time; you get to do this on actual Valentine’s Day! This company will be dancing two different programs at Valley Performing Arts Center on Valentine’s Day week-end, (February 13 and 14,) so this gift will manifest right away. And what could be more romantic than a ballet?! (I’m leaving Mr. X home, because he’s only a hip-hopper, and going with a female pal. Which is fine, too. I love my friends!) Friday, February 13 will be a colorful production of Don Quixote. And Saturday, February 14, will bring us a Gala Performance, consisting of a potpourri of famous ballets from the great choreographer, Marius Petipa, which I could not be more excited about! They include The Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Romeo & Juliet, and The Dying Swan. I can’t imagine a better composite program. www.valleyperformingartscenter.org

Les 7 Doigts de la Main—Having been in a circus myself, I’m always fascinated by the genre. And I can’t wait to see this modern-day troop’s show, Séquence 8, at the Valley Performing Arts Center on February 19, just a few days after Valentine’s Day, (which I like to call “Valentine’s Week,” just in case Mr. X goofs up on the day.) It’s not a circus, per se—no animals. But it’s the best part of one–acrobatics. This Canadian troupe will perform what’s been described as “an explosive acrobatic dance and theater piece, with high-volume electro music, that contemplates the role of the ‘other,’ and how we define ourselves through and against it.” I couldn’t even convey that concept through my writing, let alone act it out! I can’t wait to see how they do all that. I think this will be the perfect event for fans of any kind of movement at all. Hope to see you there, with or without your own Valentine. www.valleyperformingartscenter.org

That’s it for this year. Happy Gifting!

VALENTINE’S DAY GIFT IDEAS 2014

Sometimes, when a holiday is upon us, I try to remember back over every one of those that I’ve experienced through the years. Working my brain that hard actually helps me fall asleep!

But nowadays, and for the four and a half years since I began this e-zine, I don’t need to wrack my brain; I just look back through the INAM archives (on the left-hand side of the front page) to see what I was thinking on that particular holiday through the years. One thing I noticed that I’m especially proud of is that for all my Gift Ideas columns, (for certain holidays like Christmas, Mother’s Day, and of course, Valentine’s Day,) I come up with really unique items to suggest to you.

I don’t enjoy getting anything as banal as flowers or candy myself (unless it’s dark chocolate covered nuts, or something equally spectacular,) so if your loved one feels the same way, I hope that these extra-special gifts will come in handy for you. And there’s something for everyone on this list! (Because not every “Valentine” is the person you’re in a love relationship with. They can also be pals or even family members. Or even your pet, in a good way. We know I was sure mad about Clarence Darrence!)

So, let’s get to it already!

Fluxmob Bolt Charger—My intern, Stephanie, is young, which automatically means she’s cell phone-obsessed. So I let her give you her thoughts on this one, which Mr. X and I highly recommend, as well. She said, “This charger is an absolute necessity for the busy techie. It’s the world’s smallest dual charger, serving both as a charger and a battery back-up. While the phone is charging, the backup battery is also being charged–how convenient! The old USB phone charger can now be left at home because there is enough battery life in this small charger to have two full charges, which is perfect for anyone who is constantly on the go and using their phone. This charger is not only a time-saver, but a life-saver for those extra hours needed to keep going throughout the day.” Amen to that honey! Now, if only someone could invent one of these to recharge my way-too-busy mind and body!!! www.fluxmob.com

Pursecase—This is one item that I’ve seen from its inception, way before its CEOs, Kelley and Jenn, were featured on ABC’s Shark Tank. I fell in love with it right away, and am so proud of these young ladies for seeing it through. Now we can all look as hip as they do! Pursecase is a phone case that looks like a pretty little purse! What a great disguise! But there’s even more to it than that; I showed it to my happening young intern, Stephanie, and she loved it! She said, “This case is absolutely fabulous–it’s the perfect gift for that oh-so-stylish loved one. Not only is it elegantly designed, but it’s touted to be durable and shock-proof, too. (I appreciate that part because I drop my phone a lot.)” In addition to being a hip cover for one’s cell phone, it also has some necessary features of a real mini purse, such as a compact mirror and a pocket to hold cash, IDs, and credit cards. Steph added, “What’s not to like? The adorable gold chain handle enables you to wear it on your wrist, sort-of like a mini bracelet, adding a little touch of bling to anyone’s outfit.” I second all of that. www.pursecase.com

Ecoxoxo.com—Any gift from this eco-friendly shopping site is special, in my opinion, so I hesitate to recommend just one item for Valentine’s Day. But the CEO is high on the various very affordable (my assessment, not his,) bracelets that are made out of re-cycled glass, so I would always go with his artistic recommendations. I showed the site to Stephanie, and she was very impressed. She wrote the following: “Want to give your partner a beautiful gift while giving back to others at the same time? This fair trade Kenyan bracelet is perfect for just that! Made of recycled glass, and hand-painted, with a removable charm, each of these multi-colored bracelets is one-of-a-kind. The beautiful work that has been done by the Kenyans will be reciprocated back to them: the sale of each bracelet donates one dollar towards the education of a Kenyan child. How wonderful is that? Your gift-ee receives a unique and charming bracelet, while you’ll be giving a child the gift of education–sounds like a great Valentine’s Day present to me!” www.ecoxoxo.com

Spa Sonic Face & Body Polisher—I think that by now everyone know that I consider skincare to be of paramount importance to just about everyone, (man, woman, or teen,) and this multi-brush face and body polisher will help in that department. And one of the pastel shades it comes in is pink, which is perfect for this holiday! The set includes a face brush and body brush for extra cleansing, a sponge for moisturizer application, and my favorite part, a pumice stone for feet and rough patches on elbows, knees, etc. (I don’t have those anywhere else, but my heels are the worst part of me because I still walk barefoot often. And this spinning pumice is just the ticket to help with that situation!) A major bonus is that the set comes with alkaline batteries; how awful is to get a new fun product home and then find-out you need batteries for it?! That won’t happen with this gift on Valentine’s Day! And that ease of use is a gift in itself! www.myspasonic.com

Sage Stone Botanicals—This is not your usual hand cream; the thickness is a dream–I’ve been using it recently on my less-than-baby-soft heels, and they’re already feeling so much better. (And used in conjunction with the suggestion right above, it’s a winning combo!) It’s the perfect gift for someone who loves giving their skin an extra dose of TLC. Sage Stone Botanicals offers a wide variety of scents, as well, making sure everyone is satisfied. They have lovely fragrances, like the new Rain, but this fledgling company is so sensitive to allergies, (like mine!,) that they also offer unscented. (In the interest of honesty, I must tell you that even the unscented has some scent, but it’s more of the natural ingredients than of perfume.) Now if only every audience member I ever sit near would use this cream, I could breath a sigh of relief each time I entered a theatre. www.sagestonebotanicals.com

Coordinates Collection—I wrote about this special jewelry recently, and as I do with all products I write about, I check-out the website first. The more I checked into this one, the more I realized how romantic a gesture giving one of these would be! You get to pick almost everything about these bracelets and rings, (such as the style and color of the band, and whether or not you want a gem,) but the real romantic part is that they engrave the coordinates of wherever you two designate as your special moment. Hmmm, where exactly was it that I first held Mr. X hostage? [Note: we’ve been saying that for years, so it’s a romantic saying to us, but I know it’s not always a great joke nowadays, so I do apologize in that direction.] www.coordinatescollection.com

Cirque du Soleil—And then there’s the old tried and true “take him/her to a romantic event.” Let me tell you, there is no more romantic date than a trip to the Grand Chapiteau at the Santa Monica Pier to see the latest rendition of Cirque du Soleil. This one is entitled Totem, and you can read my full review here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/live-production-totem. And whether you go see it on actual Valentine’s Day, or just present your loved-one with the tickets on that date, you’ll both be in love…with the fabulous show! www.cirquedusoleil.com/totem

So, please try your best to make someone feel loved this holiday. And know that you are all loved by me!

MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS

I know it’s still April, but I have a feeling you’re already worrying about what to get the women in your life for Mother’s Day. I’m here to help you get a jump on it.

As you may know, I eschew regular gifts such as flowers and candy for special occasions such as this one. It’s 2013, for goodness sake; I think we should get the mothers in our lives more creative gifts on their day.

So, here are some suggestions to get you started, all that I can personally vouch for. Each one works as a stand-alone gift, but they might be fun to use in concert. (Which means “together,” if you’re not familiar with the term–I always like to throw in an English lesson, as a tribute to my own little mother.) Mom can tweeze her brows, then wear her fascinator while sipping wine and eating cookies!

Let’s get to them:

Joey Healy Collection Elite Sculpting Tweezer—I’m so glad that this beauty tool is now available to the public! As a girly-girl, I think gifts that help make us more beautiful are the best ones. (Unless it’s a bag to put over one’s head.) And I’ve noticed more and more of my pretty pals traveling with a tweezer for emergency unwanted hair removal. (Don’t we always notice those suckers in the car mirror? Right, ladies?) So, tweezers are an always-appreciated gift. (You don’t have to mention that they’re for you mom’s moustache even moreso than for her eyebrows! You know what I’m saying?!)

When I was last in New York, I had Joey Healy himself do my brows, (which if you missed, you can read here: www.itsnotaboutme.tv/news/2012/12/10/beautynew-york-the-joey-healy-brow-studio,) and I loved his buttery tweezers. Let’s face it, we’ll never to be able to shape them as well as he does, but the recipient of this gift will be well on her way to looking better. And now, when she raises her brow (which she will inevitably do if she’s a mother,) at least it will look great! www.joeyhealy.com

Fascinators First—In case you missed the almost-two-years-ago wedding of William and Catherine, (which I can’t imagine,) a fascinator is a head piece that’s not quite a hat, (but is way more than a headband,) and just has to be fabulous! You want it to go with your outfit, be classy, yet out-do all others at the same time. Tall order. But not for designer Rita Gruzman of Fascinators First.

My own arrived in time for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral, so you just know that I’ll be wearing mine all day…in front of the TV! (Though I may leave for some afternoon tea, to show off my new fascinator.) And I’ll definitely be breaking that baby out for next week-end’s Kentucky Derby. For the Mother’s Day theme, you can help your own mom get a jump on Catherine becoming a mother by wearing one now. There are really so many occasions this can come in handy.

Seriously, it’s such a fun gift, and perfect for Spring. Rita has a whole bunch of designs you can choose from, and her site even suggests what events each one is perfect for. I swear—I was giggling when I opened the box and say mine in person. It’s so impressive. Mr. X loved it, too. There are ultra-classy one, like the ones in her Great Gatsby line, (so now,) and whimsical choices, as well. Or she’ll work with you to put your own spin on one. This will definitely surprise any woman, and even if she just sets it down and admires it, she’ll appreciate having something so special as a hand-made fascinator. Trust me on this one. www.etsy.com/Fascinatorsfirst

Viva Diva Wines—You all know that I hate the taste of alcohol, but Lucia and Mr. X loved these wines so much that I know they’ll make a great gift. Lucia, who knows the most about alcohol of anybody I know, (in a good way,) highly recommends the flavored Moscatos, while Mr. X was more partial to the very sweet red, which even I was able to sip! (I usually just touch alcohol to my lips, then shudder at the taste while I lick it off.)

One drink I can muster, though, is a bellini, which most people erroneously make with champagne, but is really supposed to be made with prosecco. Well, I made some for brunch with this company’s prosecco and they were outstanding. And this company has such a girly name, (sorry, Mr. X,) that their wines are the perfect beverage for Mother’s Day, either to serve or to give to any hard-working mom. (And yes, being a bon vivette such as I, is hard work!) www.vivadivawines.com

Cookie Daddy—They’re called Cookie Daddy but the cookie momma here is perhaps even more important!!! That’s why these delicious confections are perfect for Mother’s Day. (Father’s Day, too, actually–I know mine would have loved them!) Just make sure you order with enough time for them to get to you because they’re sent from North Carolina. They arrive with “Eating Instructions,” which sounds funny, but trust me, they come in handy. (They’re more than “bring up to your mouth, bite, chew, swallow.”) There are eleven creative flavors, but as a chocolate lover, those are the six I’m recommending. You may have noticed in a recent column that I sort-of made fun of the trend of adding salt to chocolate, but let me tell you, I love that combo in the cookie from this company!

There’s a tie for my fave between the dark chocolate with pecans and framboises (raspberries) and the brownie cookie with dulce de leche and pecans. I followed some of those above-mentioned instructions, and heated each one up in the microwave for about seventeen seconds, and they tasted like they just came out of the oven. I paired them with a giant glass of really cold milk and there was my afternoon snack for a week. They’re so rich, I eat only one day. So, this is one food gift that can last for awhile! www.cookiedaddy.com

There you have it. These are all great gifts for any time, but I always want to make sure that mothers get some fun stuff on their day. Just keep these suggestions in mind if anyone ever declares a national Karen’s Day, too!
