Living in the heart of Los Angeles, I, of course, bump into, or at least spy, celebrities all the time. But when I saw one, (whom I’m featuring here,) while out to lunch on my birthday, I realized that I had not published a Celeb Sightings column in a while. So it’s about time.

I’ll go back a few months for you, to where I left off after the previous CS article, to begin the new highlights. Here goes:

Nigel Lythgoe walking to his seat. Photo by Karen Salkin.

10/10/25 Tony winner for starring in Hairspray on Broadway back in the day, Marissa Jaret Winokur, on opening night of a production of the same show at the Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks. She directed this offering, and not only did she sit right behind me, she and her party and my friend and I were given the VIP treatment together to get in and out of the building! Former American Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe, was in attendance, as well, to support his daughter-in-law, Becky Lythgoe, who was one of the stars of the show. (Here’s my full review of that musical: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-hairspray.)

Jay Leno. Photo by Karen Salkin.

10/15/25 Jay Leno in Bel Air, being the featured performer at WeSpark’s May Contain Nuts event which consisted of a delicious and healthful dinner, auctions, (both silent and live,) and a wonderful comedy show. I can’t believe that I never watched Jay’s talk show, but now I’ve seen him a couple of times in the past few months! And enjoyed his easy humor.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-64467" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/IMG_4309-e1769395456464-121x300.jpg" alt="John Landis in the center, being helped up by kind strangers.
11/8/25 I was at a very classy fete, to celebrate the publication of a new coffee table book, at a classic abode in the Hollywood Hills, when we heard a giant thud behind the couch my pals and I were occupying. A guest had not noticed that there was a step up to the bar, and had crashed to the floor. As everyone rushed to help him, we noticed that it was none other than…Thriller video and prolific movie director, John Landis! Luckily he only tripped and did not seem to get hurt. Much. He was pleasant throughout the entire event, which impressed me more than his work!

Paula Abdul. Photo by Karen Salkin.

11/17/25 I was a bit shocked that in totally jaded LA, the crowd at the World Choreography Awards in Hollywood were sooo excited to see honoree Paula Abdul! When she arrived, I was standing just inside the entrance speaking with a mutual pal choreographer, and a few people rushed over to take pix with Paula. And she looked great! (Here’s the link to my detailed story of the uber-fun awards show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/danceawards-show-world-choreography-awards-2025.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-64471" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/photo-e1769395711317-199x300.jpeg" alt="Ray Buktenica and Karen Salkin.
12/7/25 Classic sitcom star, (Rhoda, House Calls, Cutters,) Ray Buktenica, entertaining the crowd with his ever-popular Christmas sweater, (which features a mysterious moving fireplace!,) at a private Holiday Party in Bel Air. (I just had to get a picture with him! Good thing celebrity photog, Brad Elterman, was also a guest there!)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-64469" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/IMG_5135-e1769395982791-279x300.jpg" alt="John O'Hurley.
12/12/25 I saw American Idol’s Tamyra Gray, Seinfeld’s John O’Hurley, and Modern Family’s now-grown-up-Lily, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, not just onstage performing in The Wonderful Winter of Oz at Bank of America Performing Arts Center in Thousand Oaks, but also at the very exclusive opening night party at a British pub afterwards. I got to chat with Tamyra about her incredibly young looks and cute family, and then John stopped me on my way out to marvel over my fabulous Christmas sweater. Nice people and fun event. (If you missed my review, here’s the link: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-the-wonderful-winter-of-oz.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-64470" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/IMG_6199-e1769396078851-159x300.jpg" alt="Paul Stanley, looking like he's been doing some home improvements. Photo by Karen Salkin, on her birthday!

12/13/25 Soulful singer Aloe Blacc in Glendale, both onstage and upstairs at the afterparty for the Pacific Jazz Orchestra’s Holiday Jazz Spectacular, which was a very fun holiday show at the Alex Theatre. (The link to my review of it is right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/music-pacific-jazz-orchestras-holiday-jazz-spectacular.) [That’s Aloe Blacc at the event in the pic at the top of this page. Photo by Karen Salkin.]

1/14/26 While enjoying my birthday lunch at a known celebrity hotspot in Bel Air, (have I spent enough time in that area in the past few months?,) no sooner had my friend, Roz, (who was kind enough to take me there to celebrate,) just told me, “You’re it! You’re the only celebrity here!,” when I looked up and noticed KISS member Paul Stanley at the counter, ordering take-out. So Happy Birthday to me!

CELEB SIGHTINGS 71

In-between all my intense sports-watching of the past few months, I managed to get out only a few times, but surprisingly, spied a celeb just about every time I did. Here are the highlights of this summer:

Christopher McDonald and his wife at the Hamlet opening.

6/4/25 Happy Gilmore and Hacks actor, Christopher McDonald, at the opening night of the very odd Hamlet at the Mark Taper Forum. Chris and I got on the elevator together after the show, (along with both of our guests and three other audience members, including at least one who was a pal of the director,) and as we descended, I could not hold myself back from observing out loud, “Well, that’s two hours none of us are getting back.” I’m thrilled to say that Chris, and all of them, actually, knowingly laughed really hard. It appeared that everyone was thrilled for someone else to say what they were all thinking. (You can still read my honest review right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-hamlet.)

Jay Leno. Photo by Todd Felderstein, courtesy of the LAJFF, as is the one at the top of this article.

6/26/25 This was a fun one. At the Opening Night Gala for the LA Jewish Film Festival, I was sitting on a little bench in a sort-of hidden area of the lobby of the Saban Theatre in Beverly Hills, when who should enter through the side door but the honoree of the event, Jay Leno! I had seen him a few other times before, (including at Costco at the height of the pandemic, when he and his wife were the only two people not wearing masks!,) but he looked extra-tall (and thin) this night. He was wearing a leather jacket and jeans and carrying a helmet, so I’m assuming he rode a motorcycle over. (And that he does not know how to dress for a Gala!!!) He looked right at me and said a quick, “Hello,” which made me feel like I was the official welcoming committee!

So why was his Italian self speaking at a Jewish event, you ask? Because he had a couple of lines in the movie that opened the festival, Midas Man, in the role of…Ed Sullivan! (Yes, his mis-casting is as awful as you would imagine.) But he spoke before the screening, and it’s a good thing he did because he let us know that the producers could not get rights to any appropriate songs, which explained the odd music choices in the film. If not for Jay’s heads-up, my friend and I agreed that we would have been scratching our heads over the song in a movie about…the Beatles’ manager!

Vincent Rodriguez, Jr. at the & Juliet opening.

8/15/25 I spied two stars of bygone and very popular television series, at the Ahmanson theatre for the opening night of the incredible Broadway musical, & Juliet. Both Ahmanson perennials, Rhoda’s Ray Buktenica and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Vincent Rodriguez, Jr., were standing in groups so close to each other in the side lobby at intermission that I thought they knew each other. It was great to see them both be so upbeat about the show, as everyone was on Opening Night! And I’m assuming, every night! (Here’s the link to my glowing review of the happy musical: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-juliet.)

8/16/25 Singer Englebert Humperdinck in…my neighborhood grocery store! He was confusedly using an ATM, but smiled when my friend, who was shocked to see him so close-up and personal, said, “It’s you!” And, fyi—he still has dark hair!

Ann-Margret, Pat Boone, and Nancy Kwan. Photo by RozWolfPR.

8/30/25 Very famous old school show biz icons Ann-Margret, Pat Boone, and Nancy Kwan in Beverly Hills showing up to the Writers Guild Theater to participate in the Cinecon Classic Film Festival. I showed Mr. X the pix of Ann-Margret, who still looks gorgeous, and he could not believe her age! She looks decades younger, no lie. Even though I’ve never met the legendary actress, I feel very close to her because during my time in the Laugh Factory Players improv troupe, whenever I’d be asked to sing as someone famous, I did Bye Bye Birdie as Ann’s character, Kim MacAfee, in the beginning of that classic film. So I’ve always privately thanked her for that because channeling her performance made my non-singing self sound good enough for the assignment.

9/12/25 Prolific stage and screen actor Obba Babatundé at the Wow Gifting Suite in the Universal Hilton. (Mr. X had just seen him on The Manchurian Candidate, so we looked him up, and that man has one of the hugest credits lists that we have ever seen!) My friend and I rode down in the elevator with Obba after the event, and he was such a gentleman! Good to see that these days.

Uzo Aduba. Photo courtesy of The Travel Lounge.

9/12/25 Emmy nominee this year, Uzo Aduba, at The Travel Lounge in the Juniper Garden of the 1 Hotel in West Hollywood. She arrived just as my friend and I were leaving, so I was happy for Uzo knowing that she was about to have the fun that we just did!

9/13/25 Queer Eye for the Straight Guy’s Carson Kressley coming out of my favorite facialist’s place, Marc Edward Skincare, in West Hollywood. I’m assuming that he was getting all glowy for the next day’s Emmys.

Because I’ve spent so much time in the house watching sports this year, (college and pro basketball play-offs, National and World’s skating championships, and now the start of baseball season,) I haven’t been out and about enough to have spied tons of celebrities around town. But the ones I did spy are all fun ones. So let’s get right to them.

2/27/25 What a potpourri of disparate celebs were at the opening of 44: The Musical at the Douglas Theatre in Culver City! I spied TV personality Nicole Richie with her husband Benji Madden of the singing group Good Charlotte, Rhoda’s Ray Buktenica, singer Jon “Bowzer” Bauman of Sha Na Na fame, and Dancing with the Stars bandleader *Ray Chew, who even shot a photo of a trio of us! Whew. (If you missed my glowing review of the musical, here’s that link: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-44-the-musical.) *(That’s Ray Chew at the top of this article, photo by Karen Salkin, by accident. Her camera actually went off facing Ray as she was handing him her phone for him to take a picture of her!)

2/28/25 Seen at the Wow gifting suite in honor of the Oscars were a trio of not really celebs, but show business folks whom I believe people know for one reason or another. There was a recurring actor from Seinfeld, John O’Hurley, and old time Cuban actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who I think is best known for the ’80s movie Moscow on the Hudson. And then there was weirdo former O.J. Simpson pal, Kato Kaelin, who was involved in his murder case because he was <del>freeloading</del> living on Simpson’s property at the time. I haven’t laid eyes on him since the trial thirty years ago, and even more weirdly, he was still instantly recognizable. (You can read about everything that went on there right here: (You can read about everything that went on there right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-suite-wow-creations-pre-oscars-gifting-suite-2025.)

3/4/25 There was a plethora of fun TV stars at the opening night of a revival of Topdog/Underdog at the Pasadena Playhouse. And I was lucky enough to chat a bit with my three faves there that night, who were all grateful for the recognition. At intermission, first up for me was William Stanford Davis, who plays Mr. Johnson, the janitor, on Abbott Elementary. Then I got to tell Vella Lovell, who plays the sweet boss on the hilarious sitcom, Animal Control, how much I adore her and her entire show. But the best was at the after-party. I had met the star of the play, and of the recent TV series, God Friended Me, Brandon Micheal Hall, a few years ago, and I had a pic of us at the ready. So when I saw him that night, I asked him, “Would you like to see us in our youth?” He, of course, said yes, and loved it. So then he took my phone and took a bunch of new pix of us! What a night for me! (The play is over, but if you’re curious about it, here’s that link: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-topdogunderdog.)

4/16/25 This was a fun one for me. As my friend Marc and I were driving up Sunset Blvd. towards Hollywood, we were stuck in traffic in front of the store H. Lorenzo on Sunset Plaza. I noticed two casually-dressed guys—one very tall, one normal height—walking around the corner of the building to the entrance. The tall guy was rocking a hoodie over his head, (it was a tad chilly out,) a beard, and a big smile, so my eye was drawn to his face. And I realized that he was…LA Clippers star, James Harden! It was three days before the NBA play-offs were starting, so I guess he was cool and loose enough to shop a little, perhaps for his first game arrivals fit. Marc knows nothing about sports, but as soon as I told him that it was James, traffic started moving a bit, so he pointed-out, “And that’s his car!” It was parked right against the building, which is not really a spot. But it was James’s famous Bentley, so I guess he wanted it close. And safe!

4/16/15 As my friend and I continued on to the Pantages theatre that evening, now along Hollywood Blvd., we came upon Ben Affleck at the premiere of his new film, The Accountant 2 at the Chinese Theatre. (We saw Harry Potter and the Cursed Child that night, and here’s the link to my review of it: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-harry-potter-and-the-cursed-child.)

This is the sixty-ninth Celeb Sightings column here on INAM, but, almost shockingly, my sixty-eighth one was published…in 2020! Just six days before the Covid 19 pandemic lockdown began!

Karen Salkin and James Tupper. Photo by Laura Saul.

So, of course, there were no sightings of anybody for a couple of years after that. And once the world got slowly going again, and I began being out and about again, I didn’t really recognize many celebs at the time because…we were all covering our faces! And then, quite honestly, with soooo much else to write about all the time, I just forgot about this popular feature of this e-zine!

But for the past few months, readers and followers have been asking me to get back to it already. So here it finally is—just about five years since my last one, starting a few months ago:

Haley Joel Osment.

11/17/24 There were many celebs at the opening night of the musical La Cage Aux Folles at the Pasadena Playhouse, but the only one I was interested in was The Sixth Sense’s Haley Joel Osment. I was thrilled to chat with him for a bit during intermission. He seemed genuinely grateful when I told him how absolutely brilliant he was in that old-ish film, and at such a young age. Then, at the post-show mingle-sesh, I noticed newly-married musical couple, Dear Evan Hansen’s Ben Platt and The Good Doctor’s Noah Galvin. Noah was actually Ben’s understudy in the Broadway musical! How interesting is that?! (Here’s the link to my review of La Cage: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-la-cage-aux-folles.)

Kenny Ortega. Photo by Karen Salkin.

12/6/24 Being fans of choreographer-extraordinaire Kenny Ortega, who worked with Michael Jackson on what turned out to be his final project, This Is It, Mr. X and I both noticed him as soon as we entered the downstairs lobby of The Wallis to see the latest offering from the excellent dance company BodyTraffic. Kenny was using a cane a bit, so everyone seemed to be going up to him in his seat to pay a bit of tribute. (In case you’re curious about that company’s show, here’s the link to to my review: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/dance-bodytraffics-this-song-reminds-me-of-you-at-the-wallis.)

Karen Salkin and Ray Buktenica. Photo by Karen Salkin.

12/13/24 At intermission of opening night of Once Upon a Mattress at the Ahmanson, a glowing fan excitedly called me over to point-out Ray Buktenica of Rhoda, House Calls, and Life Goes On fame. And as she was gushing over his still-handsome self, we both noticed adorbs Vincent Rodriguez from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. So I was showing her a picture he had taken of the two of us at an event a few years ago. I still had that pic on my phone in my hand as I was walking back into the theatre, when who should be holding the door for me other than…Vincent himself! I showed him the pic and am happy to report that he remembered taking it! I wish we had shot a new one to share with you, but I was just thinking of seeing more of Sutton Foster, (who was starring in the musical,) in Act II. (My full review of Once Upon a Mattress is right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-once-upon-a-mattress.)

Erik Estrada being overjoyed to see Karen Salkin. Photo by Roz Wolf.

1/3/25 The Wow Creations Gifting Suite before the Golden Globes featured a trio of old school celebs, which was fun. First up was my old pal, Erik Estrada, from the old TV show CHiPs, who was entertaining the masses, (and teaching my friend and me where to look for the best selfies!) There was also the mom from E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Dee Wallace, rocking a new cute, spiky, gray hairdo. And then, on my way out, I spied the “cuchi-cuchi girl” herself, Charo. She still has the legs of a twenty-year-old! (You can read all about our interactions in-depth right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-suite-wow-creations-pre-golden-globes-gifting-suite-2025.)

1/25/25 I saw one of my old celeb crushes, James Tupper, of Men In Trees and Big Little Lies fame, on stage at the Odyssey in WLA. Even better than his performance was seeing him in the lobby after the play, greeting friends and fans, (which I am now in both categories!) I had met him a mere fifteen years before, and then we talked on the phone for a long time the week before, and when he saw me, he gave me a giant smile and a warm manly hug. (Here’s the link to my review of that play: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/the-seagull.) [Note: Photo of James and Karen is the first one in this article.]

2/1/25 Grammy-nominated singer Johnny Gill, looking as sexy and soulful as he did in New Edition, at GBK’s Grammys event in Beverly Hills. GBK always has a bunch of celeb guests, but Johnny was the only one I was interested in seeing there that day. (If you missed all the scoops on the event, here’s that link: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-lounge-gbk-brand-bars-2025-critics-choice-grammy-fire-relief-lounge.) [Note: Photo of Johnny, by Karen Salkin, is the one at the top of this page.]

From the top: Nina Herzog, Karen Salkin, and Vincent Rodriguez. Photo by Vincent Rodriguez.

2/13/25 What a fun time was had by all on opening night of Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown LA! Many celebs showed-up, especially musical ones. The first one I spied was ninety-year-old Broadway stalwart Millicent Martin, looking beautiful. But my fave was the aforementioned, (four paragraphs above,) Vincent Rodriguez, who played Josh, the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s love interest. Just as I was showing my friend, Nina, a picture on this very e-zine that Vincent had taken of the two of us when we first met a few years ago, (the same one I had shown to that fan at Once Upon a Mattress,) he showed up and sat right in front of us! And insisted on taking another selfie this time! How can you not love that guy?! (And, oh, I reviewed Old Friends, too, of course, right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-stephen-sondheims-old-friends.)

That’s it for now, but now that we’re back on track with this INAM feature, there will be plenty more Celeb Sightings coming up. This is Oscars Week, after all! And I will be live-tweeting many of my thoughts about that top awards show on Sunday, @MajorCelebrity. So if you don’t already follow me there, this would be a good time to do it. Just sayin’.

2020 started-out a tad slow in the celebrity sightings arena, but it picked-up a bit by the end of January. For a little while. Then February was pretty slow again, but this group ended with a bang! A big one!

That’s the back of Allison Tolman, with Robert Bailey, Jr. Photo by Karen Salkin.

I’m aware that a few of these people are really in the category of “working actors,” as opposed to being true “celebrities,” but there are a few beauts in here, especially from the music business!

So let’s get to them already, so I can get cracking on my quest for the next batch of Celeb Sightings!

1/17/20 Allison Tolman and Robert Bailey, Jr., two stars of the TV series Emergence, (which I’m the one who watches,) at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown LA on opening night of What The Constitution Means To Me. They were there to support their cast-mate, Maria Dizzia, who was starring in the play. (Jesse Tyler Ferguson was there, as well, not for the actress but rather because he’s at that theatre for just about every opening night!) (You can read my review of that show, which does play around the country, here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-what-the-constitution-means-to-me.)

Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. Photo by Karen Salkin.

1/21/20 Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays the teen-age Lily on Modern Family, at Dodger Stadium for the opening night of Cirque du Soleil’s Volta. (The internet has her age as twelve, but I can’t imagine that girl is a day younger than fifteen! If she really is twelve, she should sign-up for the WNBA this very second!) (Here’s my review of Volta, which you can still see in SoCal and in other cities around the country: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/live-production-cirque-du-soleils-volta.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-44506" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Sting-Trudie-Styler-Last-Ship-Opening-Night-AXHBoF_yS2_l-e1582852991585-278x300.jpg" alt="Trudie Styler and Sting. Look at her selfish hair style! Her last name should be taken away from her because of it!

1/22/20 Trudie Styler, getting settled in the audience for the opening night of The Last Ship, which her husband, Sting, was starring in and also wrote, at the Ahmanson Theatre. (I spied Olympic skater Michelle Kwan and Black-ish actor Laurence Fishburne there, as well. And Dancing With The Stars judge Carrie Anne Inaba sat a few rows behind me, too.) That Mrs. Sting did not know enough to not wear her hair piled on top of her head in a theatre, where she could be blocking the view of the people behind her, was shocking to me! That’s incredibly rude! (In case you’re curious, as all music lovers should be, here’s my review of that musical: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-the-last-ship.)

1/24/20 British actress Florence Pugh and director Greta Gerwig speaking after an industry screening of their waste-of-time (in my opinion) film, Little Women, in Culver City. (You can see my rant about that film in my YouTube video right here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDW-lyP0sj4&t=17s.)

1/25/20 Shawn Mendes! This was my favorite sighting, by far, until it wound-up tying for that privilege exactly one month later. (You’ll have to read on to find-out who the other star is. I’m actually making myself crazy trying to decide which one I loved more. But perhaps this one is the winner because…I got this photo with him!) It was at a pre-Grammys soiree in Hollywood, of course! (And, oh yeah, CeeLo Green was there, too.) (Here’s my story about that entire event: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-loungeparty-one-love-luxury-lounge-by-gbk-productions-primary-wave-music-party-honoring-the-2020-grammy-awards.) [Note: That’s Karen Salkin with Shawn Mendes at the top of this page. Photo by Denise Wilke.]

1/26/20 Devin Bright, the riotously funny child from The Unicorn, at the most popular breakfast place in Burbank. Meeting him, and seeing his and his parents’ happy reaction when I told him how talented he is, cheered me up on that otherwise bleakest of days. (Check the date, if you don’t know to what event I’m referring.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-44505" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/IMG_1873-e1582853350204-207x300.jpg" alt="Taika Waititi!
2/12/20 Jon Lovitz, sitting in the waiting room at a Beverly Hills’ doctor’s office.

P 2/25/20 Recent Oscar-winner, (for Best Adapted Screenplay for Jojo Rabbit,) Taika Waititi, doing a play reading at the Wallis in Beverly Hills. I hope that you’ve figured-out that this is the one that’s tied with Shawn Mendes as my favorite Celeb Sighting this go-round. I love Taika. And his performance was just as special as I expected. I love a person who does not let me down!!! (In case you missed it earlier this week, here’s my review of that experience: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-breaking-away-and-other-special-one-night-only-programs-at-the-wallis-upcoming-and-past.)

CELEB SIGHTINGS 67

Before we move any further into 2020, let’s finish-up my end-of-2019 Celeb Sightings. And then we’ll immediately get into all the interesting ones from these early couple of weeks of the new year. January is always such a busy month in this town, especially for events celebrating the many awards shows, and Screen Actors Guild Awards screenings (which I vote on today, actually.)

June Squibb. Photo by Karen Salkin.

Some of these people I saw from afar, and some I had the pleasure of speaking with. It was a good blend of fun sightings, all the way around. So here they are:

12/19/19 Oscar nominee June Squibb (for 2013’s Nebraska) at the Apple store in Sherman Oaks. I have no idea why we two luddites were even in there, but I’m glad that I got to talk to her for a second; she was exactly as sweet as most of her characters. And she looked amazing for the nonagenarian that she is!!!

Michael B. Jordan and Jamie Foxx. Photo by Karen Salkin.

12/22/19 Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan in West Hollywood speaking after an industry screening of their current important film, Just Mercy. I was never a fan of Jamie (as a person, not an actor,) but let me tell you—that man has confidence! His words were very honest and educational.

12/31/19 Justin Guarini, the very first American Idol runner-up, (and Mr. X’s favorite commercial character, as “Lil’ Sweet,”) with his young son, chatting-up the owner of a Bel-Air pharmacy, while rocking a new cute ‘do. (It’s sort-of buzzed on the sides and very curly on the top.)

Karen Salkin and Jake Choi. Photo by Patty Onagan.

1/3/20 Single Parents’ “Miggy,” Jake Choi, (with whom I share my January 14th birthday!,) at the Secret Room Events gifting lounge in Century City, hanging with The Terror’s Miki Ishikawa, (but definitely no couple alert there—trust me!,) and…me! He actually spent a lot of time with me, and was absolutely adorbs! To everybody. That was a pleasure to experience. [Note: That’s Jake and Miki in the pic at the top of this page. Photo by Karen Salkin.]

<img class="size-medium wp-image-43620" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Screen-Shot-2020-01-07-at-5.54.30-PM-e1579206119405-300x227.png" alt="Bruce Dern.
1/3/20 How To Get Away With Murder’s bad guy, Esai Morales, and multiple Oscar nominee Bruce Dern (who, coincidentally earned his second nod for Nebraska, the same film I mentioned June Squibb for at the top of this column!,) in West Hollywood at the GBK pre-Golden Globes gifting lounge. Bruce was chillaxing while Esai was mingling.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-43619" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/Screen-Shot-2020-01-15-at-12.29.59-PM-e1579206236316-300x284.png" alt="Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman.
1/4/20 Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman doing the Q-and-A after an industry screening of their Oscar-nominated film, Bombshell.

1/14/20 Director Quentin Tarantino speaking after the biggest industry screening of his recent major film, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. And we were in Hollywood. (If you noticed the date–yes, that is correct—this is what I chose to do for…my birthday!)

Quentin Tarantino. Photo by INAM staff.

And now it’s on to my Celeb Sightings for the rest of the year. (And this is the beginning of the year, not the decade! If you missed my explanation of why 2020 is not the beginning of a new decade, which I featured in both of my recent New Year’s columns, here it is again: 1 through 10 is one decade, 11 through 20 is another decade, and 21 through 30 is another, and so on. So the end of this current decade is not until December 31, 2020. As my friend Barbara Burton wrote on Facebook, “I guess many people are unaware that we are just entering the last year of the current decade, which will end a year from today.” So I know that at least one other person gets it!)

With all the awards shows and parties coming-up in the next month or so, my life is sure to be rife with celebrities!

Speaking of celebrities, the SAG Awards are this Sunday. And, of course, I plan to live-tweet them. So if you’re not one of the thousands who already follow me on Twitter, this would be a good time to do so. @MajorCelebrity. I’ll see you there on Sunday!

This is my final Celeb Sightings of 2019. Heck–it’s my last one of the entire decade!!! Wow; that’s actually mind-boggling.

I spent the last half of October and the first half of November in New York City, which you would think would have celebrities everywhere you turn. But let me tell you, the last few months of the year have been slim pickins, on both coasts.

But they are all interesting ones, and far from the usual suspects. As a matter of fact, I’ve seen only about half of them in person before, so there’s definitely that.

So, let’s get to them already!

New York:

Sean Young (and her rescue dog.) Photo by Karen Salkin.

10/22/19 Sean Young, the formally stunning actress who is now talked about only as being crazy, sitting right next to me at the cocktail portion of the Rescue Dogs Rock NYC Gala, held at a venue on Park Avenue that’s so secretive, it does not even have a name! She looked okay enough, but she was one of the very few who brought a dog along. That behavior was actually okay this time because it was encouraged by this dog-adoption organization. I guess she finally found her purpose in life, so good for her. (You can read all about that gala here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/charityevent-rescue-dogs-rock-nyc-gala.)

Willem Dafoe. Photo by Karen Salkin.

10/24/19 Willem Defoe in Midtown, speaking after a screening of the excellent-but-ignored movie, Motherless Brooklyn, in which he co-stars. He was a really fun and honest speaker, but I still wish I had chosen to see it at a screening with star, writer, director, and producer Ed Norton taking the floor. I love him!

10/24/19 Yes, you read that date correctly—I went right from the screening above directly over to this one! (But it was also in Midtown, so it worked-out very easily.) And I was rewarded with a panel discussion of Dolomite Is My Name with stars Eddie Murphy, Keegan Michael Key, and Titus Burgess, moderated by Spike Lee, who actually had nothing to do with this film; he’s just loving life since he won his Oscar last year! [Note: That’s the guys in the big pic at the top of this page. Photo by Karen Salkin.]

Kerry Washington. Photo by Karen Salkin.

10/29/19 Kerry Washington right up-close at the cocktail party for the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame Gala at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in Midtown. My friend (and photog) Sheila got to chat with her for awhile. I have no idea what she said to Kerry, but Kerry was smiling and laughing the entire time! (You can read about that whole event right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/new-yorktelevisionevent-broadcasting-cable-hall-of-fame-2019-gala.)

10/30/19 NBC Legal Analyst Dan Abrams just walking along 48th Street in the Theatre District.

Then back to LA:

Mark Ballas and Lindsey Stirling. Photo by Karen Salkin.

11/11/19 Dancing With The Stars alum Mark Ballas, hip-hop violinist Lindsey Stirling, and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’s Rachel Bloom (and so many more) at the World Choreography Awards in Beverly Hills. Not only did Mark and Rachel take the stage, (him to perform and accept an award, her to present,) but Mark and Lindsey hung-out in the lobby with everyone, proving once again that the dance world denizens are the most fun! (All the wonderful deets of that magical evening are right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/danceawards-show-world-choreography-awards-2019.)

11/14/19 Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, and Michael Shannon (what a group, eh?,) speaking after the premiere of their fun new film, Knives Out, in Westwood. It was a very entertaining discussion!

<img class="size-large wp-image-43059" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/IMG_8343-e1576196462498-1024x235.jpg" alt="The cast of Knives Out.

Ryan Tedder (and his wrong attire for the occasion.) Photo by Karen Salkin.

11/16/19 One Republic’s Ryan Tedder showing-up just like a normal person at Our House’s holiday gala in Beverly Hills. We chatted for a bit. He was far from the warmest person I’ve ever met, (and was even further from rocking the appropriate attire for the occasion,) but I was still glad to make his acquaintance. (This is how that entire evening went: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/party-house-of-hope-gala.)

12/2/19 John Travolta speaking after a screening of his God-awful new semi-horror film, The Fanatic, in West LA. He was personable, but still weird. My advice is to definitely stay away from this nightmare of a movie! [Note: That’s John in the very first picture in this column. Photo by Karen Salkin.]

Michelle Williams being interviewed by Karen Salkin. Photo by Roz Wolf.

12/10/19 Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams in Pasadena for Press Day for the Christmas Panto, A Snow White Christmas, (which actually opens tonight! So do not wait for my review on Monday to see it—I already know it will be excellent!) We chatted for awhile, and since it was less than a week since she had been unmasked on The Masked Singer, we discussed that show. And she confirmed that everything on there is truly hush-hush. She told me that none of the singers even see each other! And since I admired her talent on there so much, I’m looking forward to seeing her play The Wicked Queen in the Panto tonight! I’m just wondering if the singer who was the next one to be eliminated on that TV show, NBA player Victor Oladipo, (who I’m probably the only one who knew who he was the whole time,) will show-up at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium to support her! I’m bringing a basketball, just in case.

Before I begin my three-week trip to New York next Monday, let’s finish-up the celebs I’ve spied in LA for the past couple of months.

8/11/19 Two of the surviving Pointer Sisters, Anita and Ruth, at the Hollywood Museum in the heart of that town, to celebrate the private first showing of the new documentary, The Max Factor. (Here are the deets of that whole fabulous event: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/movieevent-the-max-factor.)

Tobey Maguire. Photo by Karen Salkin.

8/14/19 Tobey Maguire in West Hollywood, speaking after an industry screening of a so-so movie he’s on the producing team for, Brittany Runs a Marathon. He has that same insipid voice in person as he does on film. And he’s even shorter than I expected.

8/18/19 TV actors, The Walking Dead’s Chad L. Coleman and Girls’ Guide To Divorce’s Beau Garrett, hanging on the sidewalk in front of the theatre where they were doing a play in Hollywood, on opening night, chatting with the audience members. (Here’s more of what I say about them, in my review of that show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-saugerties.)

8/23/19 My good pal Elliott Gould doing his own grocery shopping at the Whole Foods in WLA. (But at least it’s an upscale market!)

9/8/19 Cedric the Entertainer, Michelle Kwan, Jeri Ryan, and Laurence Fishburne (although no two of them together) at the Ahmanson Theatre for the opening night of John Leguizamo’s show, Latin History for Morons. (Here’s my full review of that fun show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-latin-history-for-morons.) [Note: That’s Cedric the Entertainer at the top of this page. Photo by Karen Salkin.]

9/19/19 Old school movie dudes Edward James Olmos, Bruce Dern, and Steven Bauer at Doris Bergman’s Emmys luncheon in West Hollywood.
9/20/19 Days of Our Lives matriarch Deidre Hall, (who has played that role for over four decades!!!,) at the Wow Creations Emmys gifting suite in Hollywood. Let me tell you—that woman looks fabulous for her age!
9/21/19 The biggest celeb of all—Brad Pitt!—at the opening night of A Play is a Poem at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown LA. He and Josh Brolin passed the entire time before it started by chatting with each other and the women they came with.
9/29/19 There was a plethora of stars at the Little Shop of Horrors opening night in Pasadena! But there was no one I was more excited to see than Juan Pablo Di Pace and Billy Porter!
I just realized that it’s been quite the uber-long time since my previous Celeb Sightings column. That’s because there were so many other events to tell you about along the way!

Noah Wiley.

The end of May was a juicy one, but conversely, the beginning of June was sparse. And then it picked-up from there and has been really fun ever since!

So let’s get right to them, shall we?

5/22/19 Star of the most angst-filled summer series, The Red Line, Noah Wiley at opening night of one of the worst shows I’ve ever seen, Happy Days, at the Mark Taper Forum in downtown LA. He’s so much shorter than I would have expected. (You can read my review of that awful play here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/happy-days.)

5/29/19 Comic actor John C. Reilly in Gather, a show I have a feeling he put together himself. I know he was in the show, (as opposed to being in the audience,) which I never report here, (because I see so many famous people in shows,) but it was such an intimate theatre, and he was right there on the floor in front of my eyes, so I’m making an exception this time. (Here’s my review of that show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-gather-surprising-stories-other-mischief.)

Mindy Kaling. Photo by Karen Salkin.

5/30/19 Mindy Kaling in downtown LA at the premiere of her flop movie with Emma Thompson, Late Night. I have no idea how that woman is a star. She’s not attractive nor funny. I just don’t get it. And the movie is so poorly written. By her! My friend and I laughed just once. At a supposed comedy!!! I’m left scratching my head over how this one was green-lit to be made, and I totally get why it was a bomb.

5/31/19 Mike Tyson supporting his pal, retired basketball player Ron Artest, at the premiere of the documentary, Quiet Storm: The Ron Artest Story, which is about Ron’s struggle with mental illness. (For my review of that whole special evening, just click here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/movieparty-quiet-storm-the-ron-artest-story-premiere.)

Karen Salkin and Peter asher. Photo by Roz Wolf.

6/11/19 Former British Invasion-era pop star, (and also current music producer,) Peter Asher, (of Peter and Gordon fame,) at a reading of some comedy vignettes in Venice. (But his much more important claim to fame, in my eyes, is that he was almost Paul McCartney’s bro-in-law! His sister, actress Jane Asher, was Paul’s main squeeze way back in the day.) If someone had not told me who he was, I would have never recognized him!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-41070" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_0809-e1560736500893-1024x721-e1565294402337-300x182.jpg" alt="Abby Lee Miller on the left and Anna Trebunskaya on the very right.
6/13/19 The Secret Room Events Gift Lounge in honor of the MTV Movie Awards was filled with dance show peeps. I give Abby Lee Miller, of the reality TV show Dance Moms, tons of credit for coming out in a wheelchair, and I have to say—she seemed pleasant to everyone. I saw her smiling every time our paths crossed. And I was happy that adorable Anna Trebunskaya, one of the pro dancers on Dancing With The Stars, remembered me from us bonding over self-tanner at Secret Room’s previous event. (For all the deets of this fun event, click here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gift-lounge-secret-room-events-style-lounge-in-honor-of-the-2019-mtv-movie-tv-awards.)

Sebastian Maniscalco. Photo by Karen Salkin.

6/19/19 This was a really fun one! Mr. X and I ran right into (almost literally) my good pal Elliott Gould at a strip mall in WeHo. It turns-out that he was just leaving the eatery that Mr. X and I were going to for the first time ever! How’s that for kismet?!

6/29/19 The opening night audience of the play, Good Boys, in Pasadena, was sprinkled with several TV series actors who were there to support their cast-mates. Most notable was Riverdale’s Madchen Amick. (But you can read about the rest of them, and my review of that odd play, right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-good-boys.)

7/4/19 New hottest comedian of the moment, (and host of the upcoming MTV Music Awards,) Sebastian Maniscalco, in Westwood at our little local Fourth of July event. We talked to him for a minute, but, strangely, he wasn’t amusing in person. He was nice enough, though.

Matt Barnes. Photo by Karen Salkin.

7/8/19 Former NBA player, Matt Barnes, in downtown LA, at the CannaSpa Gifting Suite in honor of the ESPYs. He looked to be having a great time, meeting and greeting. (You can read all about that event here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-suite-cannaspa-gifting-suite-in-honor-of-the-2019-espys.)

7/9/19 Old school Laker Norm Nixon at GBK’s ESPYs Gifting Lounge in West Hollywood. We chatted about his lovely and talented wife, Debbie Allen, for awhile. (You can find-out what else went on there right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/gifting-lounge-gbks-2019-espys-gifting-lounge.)

7/10/19 Laura Bell Bundy in downtown LA at the Ahmanson Theatre for the opening night of The Play That Goes Wrong. I still feel bad that, because of the heaviest traffic I’ve ever had the misfortune to be in, I got to the venue too late to say a quick hello to several of my show biz pals on the way in. But I was happy to spy the always-fabulous LBB as I rushed to my seat. (There’s so much to say about that comedic production, and I do say all of it right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-the-play-that-goes-wrong.)

7/19/19 This was a trifecta of talented men! Sitcom actors Ray Buktenica and Jason Alexander at the opening night of Ben Vereen’s cabaret show in Hollywood. I felt a bit bad for Jason that even he had to stand in line, waiting for the place to open. And I loved meeting Ben in person post-show because I had interviewed him a few weeks before by phone. (Here are the highlights of that fun convo: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/upcomingmusic-ben-vereen-at-the-catalina-jazz-club.)
7/26/19 Academy Award-winning actor George Chakiris in Thousand Oaks at the opening night of a regional theatre’s production of West Side Story. I’ve known him a tiny bit for years, and I always love seeing him out and about, especially to support someone else in the role he won that Oscar for in the movie version of this iconic musical. (Here’s my glowing review of that whole evening: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-west-side-story.)

CELEB SIGHTINGS 63

I had not realized how long it’s been since I published one of my Celeb Sightings columns! So I’m making up for that lack by making this a long one.

Matthew Bourne and Richard Sherman.

February was a juicy month, followed by a three-week dearth of celeb sightings. (Maybe winter was too cold, even in sunny Los Angeles, for them to go out much. Or, more accurately, too cold for me to go out!) But then it picks up again in the middle of March, and gets good from there.

So let’s do some Spring Cleaning and get right to them:

<img class="size-medium wp-image-39943" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_7307-e1558069085809-99x300.jpg" alt="Megan Hilty, (through an embellished glass door.)
2/6/19 Legendary Disney composer Richard Sherman at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown LA for the opening night of Matthew Bourne’s gorgeous ballet, Cinderella. I bumped into Matthew on the way in, and he was excited to tell me that our mutual friend, Richard, was already inside. I still cannot believe that I actually know those two talented icons!!! (Here’s my review of that wonderful dance: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/dancetheatre-matthew-bournes-cinderella.)

2/8/19 This was interesting—the only two celebs who were in attendance on the opening night of Witness Uganda at the Wallis in Beverly Hills were Leslie Odom, Jr. and Megan Hilty. I couldn’t imagine what their connection was, but it turns-out that not only had I forgotten that this duo had starred as besties on the musical TV show Smash, but they also went to college together! So, perhaps they’re real-life besties, as well. (You can read all about that sort-of real life musical right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-witness-uganda.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-39944" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_7437-e1558069380963-199x300.jpg" alt="Alfred Molina.
2/10/19 Alfred Molina chatting up a storm in the lobby of the Pasadena Playhouse on opening night of the musical Ragtime. I give him, (and all of us, actually,) credit for coming out in the rain that night.
2/21/19 One-time Oscar-nominee Bruce Dern at Doris Bergman’s pre-Oscars luncheon and gifting suite in West Hollywood. I had lunch with him at this same event last year, so I was shocked to see him using a walker this time. I hope it’s just temporary, especially because I know he’s a runner. But I always love a person who still goes out and lives life despite setbacks. So, good on ya, Bruce!
2/22/19 I was thrilled to bump right into adorable actor, Jonathan Silverman, at Rafi’s Gift Suite in Beverly Hills. Jonathan and I are old pals, who had not seen each other in a long while, so this was a really fun reunion.
2/23/19 Viola Davis and her hubby at the GBK Gift Lounge in Beverly Hills. I loved her giant curly hair, but I don’t know how I recognized her without her nose running, (as it does in just about every role she’s ever done!!!)
3/13/19 The nicest guy in show biz, Blair Underwood, leaving the theatre on opening night of Lackawanna Blues at the Mark Taper Forum. I had hung-out with him and his wife once before, so I wanted to say hi, but I didn’t want to inconvenience the friend I brought to the show (because I knew we would have a long wait at the valet.) So I didn’t greet Blair, but now I sort-of wish I had. (You can read all about that worthwhile show here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-lackawanna-blues.)

3/15/19 This is a fun one. I had an amusing convo with hip-hop violinist Lindsey Stirling at the after-party for the first night of the dance festival, Moves at the Montalban in Hollywood. I told her this story: A few months ago, I was at an event where an artist did a watercolor portrait of me. She started with big blue eyes, so I was happy. For a minute. But as she went on, it looked less and less like me. When Mr. X saw it the next morning, he asked, “What’s this?” I answered, “A portrait!,” and then without skipping a beat, he asked, “Of whom???” After we laughed a bit, he told me that it looks more like Lindsey Stirling than me! So one would think that we would have just put it away somewhere, but not anyone who knows us. Since then, we keep hiding it for the other one to discover in amusing places. Lindsey and her pals loved that we do that! But that’s why we recognized her right away—because she looks just like the portrait of me! (You can read about the entire inaugural dance festival right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/dance-moves-at-the-montalban.)

<img class="size-medium wp-image-39949" src="https://itsnotaboutme.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/IMG_8453-e1558070295863-300x252.jpg" alt="(L-R) Jerry O'Connell and Rebecca Romjin, with their taller friends.
3/22/19 Married actors Rebecca Romjin and Jerry O’Connell so far out of town that I wasn’t even sure if it was them at first! But there they were, in Thousand Oaks, hanging-out in the lobby of the Fred Kavli Theatre at intermission of the opening night of Matilda the Musical. And they looked exactly like themselves. And even more amazingly, the couple they were with were even taller than giants Jerry and Rebecca!!! (Here’s my review of that weird show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-matilda-the-musical.)

3/27/19 Jodie Sweetin walking in the lobby with a child at intermission of Cirque du Soleil’s show Corteo at the Forum in Inglewood. I wouldn’t usually recognize her (because I’m not familiar with her, except for the few weeks she spent on Dancing With The Stars a few years ago,) but her face has been in the news recently because she’s a cast-mate of disgraced Fuller House actress, Lori Laughlin, who’s an idiot who spent half a million dollars to get her dumb daughter into college. And not even a prestigious one! (Here’s my review of that magical circus show: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatrelive-production-cirque-du-soleils-corteo.)

4/6/19 This one was a juicy, old school night. The opening night of Renee Taylor’s one-woman show, My Life on a Diet, at the Wallis in Beverly Hills, featured many of her show biz pals. She herself had been part of the cast of The Nanny, and in the audience were Sharon Gless (half of Cagney and Lacey,) Cindy Williams, (half of Laverne and Shirley,) and married actors Paula Prentiss and Richard Benjamin, who are each a half of their own Hollywood duo! But the biggest star there was Elliott Gould, who’s also my pal, so he’s half of our fun friendship! [Note: That’s Sharon Gless with Karen Salkin in the big pic at the top of the page. Photo by Marc Winer.] (Renee’s show is now going on tour, so you might like to read my review of it right here: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-my-life-on-a-diet.)

4/14/19 Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Marcia Gay Harden, (although not together,) at the opening night of the absolute worst show I’ve ever seen, Tiny Beautiful Things, at the Pasadena Playhouse. What a waste of time that was! Speaking of time, Nicole Richie showed-up twenty minutes after it began, and rather than being polite to the rest of the audience by just sitting in the back, she and the guy she was with chose to instead inconvenience everyone by climbing over half their row to get to their middle seats. But in this case, they were the smart ones because they didn’t have to sit through this entire snoozefest! (It was so bad, I decided not to waste one more second of my life on it, so I passed on writing a review.)

4/17/19 Jeanine Mason, who not only was the winner on Season 5 of So You Think You Can Dance but is now starring on the CW show, Roswell, New Mexico, at opening night of Falsettos at the Ahmanson Theatre in downtown LA. (In case you’re curious, here’s my review of that musical: itsnotaboutme.tv/news/theatre-falsettos.)

4/27/19 Michael Trevino, who plays Dr. Kyle Valenti on the above-mentioned Roswell, New Mexico, at the after-party for a weird show he was starring in in Santa Monica. He’s actually the one who told me that Roswell had been renewed by the CW.
5/2/19 Legendary film director Peter Bogdonavich being honored at the LA Jewish Film Festival in Beverly Hills. Although he looked pretty frail, he spoke really well and shared some interesting show biz stories with the assemblage.

5/6/19 Don Cheadle ordering a vegan hot dog from a food vendor at the George Lopez Celebrity Golf Classic in Toluca Lake. He’s so much shorter and more slight than I would have ever imagined! And right after that, George Lopez came right by me, driving his own golf cart! So I double-dipped on Celeb Sightings that day!
